Yersinia pestis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Biovar Antiqua is thought to correspond to the Plague of Justinian; it is not known whether this biovar also corresponds to earlier, smaller epidemics of bubonic plague, or whether these were even truly bubonic plague.
Biovar Medievalis is thought to correspond to the Black Death.
Biovar Orientalis is thought to correspond to the Third Pandemic and the majority of modern outbreaks of plague.

The disease caused by biovars 1 and 3 is similar, while that caused by biovar 2 differs from 1 and 3 in its host range, its limited geographical distribution and its pathology.
Biovar 2 is rarely pathogenic for humans, whereas biovars 1 and 3 are highly pathogenic, causing severe disease.

The co-inoculation provided with a significant reduction of the final populations of biovar 2 strain and an increase of its t50 values, mainly for an incubation at 30° and at 35°C. On the other hand, no detectable effect of co-inoculation was observed for the biovar 3 strain whatever the incubation temperature.
On the other hand, since the strain of biovar 2 was able to cause the wilting of tomato plants even at 30° or 35°C, the temperature could not explain why such strains were very rarely isolated from wilted plants grown in the "lowlands".
The biovar 2 strain appeared to be weakly competitive when co-inoculated with the biovar 3 one, mainly at 30°C; the effects of such interactions could be involved in the distribution of the biovars in the Island.

Yersinia pestis Pandemics | CDC EID
Based on their current geographic niche and on historical records that indicate the geographic origin of the pandemics, researchers have postulated that each biovar caused a specific pandemic (2,3).
Biovar Antiqua, from East Africa, may have descended from bacteria that caused the first pandemic, whereas Medievalis, from central Asia, may have descended from the bacteria that caused the second pandemic.
In this study, one isolate (strain Nicholisk 51) displayed a genotyping pattern typical of biovar Orientalis isolates, although this isolate was biovar Antiqua and lacked a 93-bp deletion within the glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase glpD gene characteristic for the glycerol-negative Orientalis biovar.

Soil and plant derived isolates were characterised by biovar typing, sole carbon utilisation studies, genomic fingerprinting (macro-restriction by XbaI and DraI of genomic DNA resolved by pulsed field gel electrophoresis) and pathogenicity assessment.
solanacearum isolates from soil comprised 1 biovar 3 isolate and 7 isolates of a previously non-described biovar differing from biovar 3 isolates by their inability to produce acid from mannitol.
Carbon utilisation studies confirmed the anomalous biovar isolates to be distinguishable from biovar 3 isolates by their inability to grow on mannitol as a sole source of carbon.
