Biramous -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Biramous is a term used for branched (Invertebrate having jointed limbs and a segmented body with an exoskeleton made of chitin) arthropod appendages.
Biramous appendages are best known from (An extinct arthropod that was abundant in Palaeozoic times; had an exoskeleton divided into three parts) trilobites where all the legs -- both on the head and the thorax -- are parts of biramous structures with a gill branching off above the leg.
Examples of uniramous structures are (An extinct arthropod that was abundant in Palaeozoic times; had an exoskeleton divided into three parts) trilobite (Click link for more info and facts about antennae) antennae and the legs of (Click link for more info and facts about chelicerates) chelicerates.

The antennules are biramous, the antennae have the expodite (outer branch) scale-like.
The main distinguishing features are (i) when gills occur in Isopoda they are on the abdomen but in Amphipoda on the thorax, and (ii) Isopoda have a single pair of backward-facing appendages (uropods) on the terminal abdominal segment, Amphipoda have 3 pairs, though the third is reduced in one family.
The uropods of Isopoda are biramous (two-branched) and the basal piece (peduncle) may be short and squat or long and cylindrical.

 Morphology Lecture Notes 2.
Ideas about the multiple evolution of arthropod limbs from uniramous and biramous ancestors is not supported by detailed studies of morphology, and more importantly, is not supported by studies of developmental hox genes that have emerged as powerful tools in tracing the origins of limb evolution (from Nature 388, 14 August 1997).
To understand the comparative anatomy of arthropod legs it is useful to consider a generalized biramous arthropod limb, such as from a primitive crustacean, as a hypothetical model for the ancestral state.
The biramous limb as an ancestral limb became dogma.

A biramous appendage is one that has two branches.
Crustacean biramous appendages have a basal or first portion referred to as the protopod.
As you move away from the body on a biramous appendage you find a branch on the outside, the exopod (exo means outer), and a branch on the inside, the endopod (endo means inner).

American Zoologist: Morphogenesis and homology in arthropod limbs
Limbs with two branches, termed biramous, have a medial branch (endopod) which, like a uniramous limb, is segmented and rod-- shaped; the second branch (exopod) is unsegmented and arises laterally.
On morphological grounds it is difficult to identify the major limb axis (termed endopod) to serve as a landmark for defining other branches because multibranched, phyllopodous limbs often have few or no joints-the essential feature of leg segmentation-and similarly lack iterated musculature.
To understand the pathway of transformation from biramous to other limb morphologies, one would ideally map limb morphology onto an independent phylogeny.

The outer branch is often a flattened gill, while the inner branch is often used for walking or modified for grasping, chewing, or reproduction.
A number of arthropods that now apparently have uniramous appendages, such as spiders and scorpions, are descended from ancestors that had biramous appendages: appendages may be modified in such a way that one branch is lost or concealed.
