The Ajay, Mor, Mayurakshi, Bakreswar, and Dwarka, Brahmani are the principal rivers of Birbhum.
Rice, legumes, wheat, corn (maize), and mangoes are the chief crops in the east Birbhum.

The immediate threat of epidemics came from severe drinking water shortages and the hundreds of rotting bodies and carcasses that littered many of the worst-hit areas of Murshidabad, Birbhum, Burdwan and Nadia, the reports said.
Reports of riots in the affected areas continued, with officials admitting there were problems supplying food to the people.

Army boats were rescuing people and distributing relief material to the affected at Ketugram and Purbasthali in Burdwan district, while airdropping of food packets from IAF helicopters continued at Kandi in Murshidabad district, State Home (Police) Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee told newspersons here.
Helicopter sorties would be carried out in Birbhum from Tuesday, he said.
Bhattacharjee said that as of now, 11 deaths were reported from Murshidabad, followed by eight from Burdwan, four from Midnapore, three from Howrah, two each from Birbhum, Bankura and Uttar Dinajpur and one from Hooghly.

Severe heat wave conditions sweeping India's West Bengal Friday claimed ten more lives in the state's Bardhaman and Birbhum districts taking the toll to 20 people in the past one week, according to official reports received by Press Trust of India.
Of the ten deaths, five were reported from Asansol colliery belt in Bardhaman district, where temperature ranged between 48 degree Celsius and 51 degree Celsius, and another five from neighboring Birbhum district which is also heat-wave belt.
In Birbhum district, five persons died of heat wave in the past two days.
