Topic: Bird Dropping Spider

Bird dropping spider - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The bird dropping spider (Celaenia excavate) derives its name from mimicking bird droppings to avoid predators, mainly birds.
The bird dropping spider stays motionless on its web during the day, only hunting for prey at night.
It hangs down from a single silk thread and releases a pheromone which mimics the sex smells released by female moths.

Spider - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Spiders, unlike insects, have only two body segments instead of three; a fused head and thorax (called a cephalothorax or prosoma) and an abdomen (called the opisthosoma), supported by a hard exoskeleton composed of mainly of chitin.
Spiders often use elaborate mating rituals (especially in the visually advanced jumping spiders) to allow the male to approach close enough to inseminate the female without triggering a predatory response.
While venom from either spider can be deadly to children and the infirm, since the development of antidotes to the venoms of both were developed (the funnel web spider in the mid-1980's and the wandering spider in 1996), no humans have died from their bites.

 Bird-dropping Spiders
Other names for this spider are the Death's Head Spider, as its markings can also resemble the shape of a skull, and the Orchard Spider, because it is often seen on fruit trees where moths, its main source of food, may be abundant.
The unfortunate male moths that are attracted by the spider's deceiving pheromone eventually flutter close enough to the spider to be grabbed by its strong front legs.
The bite of this spider is not considered to be dangerous.

This spider's body is very broad and grows to the size of a 20c piece, with its 8 legs being the length of a pin (fairly short for a spider).
Trapdoor spiders are not particularly harmful to man however, like Tarantulas, the tiny hairs on the legs of some species leave tiny red marks where the "toothed" hairs on the spiders' feet have clung to the skin.

 Spider Woman - Crystalinks
"The great Spider Woman made all the birds of clay and made them come alive, so thus have I made one for you, and when you toss it into the air the breeze will make it look as if it too were alive," he said handing her the plaything.
After playing with the bird in various ways, the girl began to pretend that it was a real, live one and tossed it high in the air to watch it flutter about before dropping back to her hand or falling to the earth.
When the children saw the bird return they were filled with hope, but the lad was almost afraid to put in his hand, for they were very hungry again and he dreaded the disappointment if there were nothing there.

 The crab spiders of Africa
The crab spiders are arguably the beauties of the spider world and one of the most intriguing.
At the Spider Research Centre of the Agricultural Research Council in Pretoria, South Africa, several research projects on thomisids are undertaken ranging from taxonomic research to their use as biological control agents in agro-ecosystems.
Although spiders may be incapable of controlling major pest outbreaks by themselves, their role in a complex predatory community may be important to regulate pest species at low densities early in the season and in between peaks of pest species activity.

During the day the female spider sits huddled on a branch or among her egg cases and is hardly ever noticed.
Birds are predators of spiders but they understandably tend to avoid each other's dung, giving the female spider excellent protection.
At night the spider becomes active, moving to the end of the branch to wait for moths to come by.

Such a mutation might occur randomly, or it could be man-made in a laboratory for one of two purposes: to study the dangerous mutated strain to develop vaccines against it, or to use it as a biological weapon to deliberately kill people, as recently suggested in a Canadian military intelligence agency report.
Because Mother Nature rather than politics determines when wild birds start migrating, the date of such a pre-emptive attack could arguably not be postponed on the hopes that negotiations or U.N. resolutions or better intelligence could mitigate the threat.
Even if bird flu does become transimissable between humans, there is no guarantee that it will be as dangerous as it is at present.
