With the Birdcage 75th, based on the Maserati heritage and on its most advanced mechanicals and realized in collaboration with Motorola, Pininfarina revives the storied theme of the true dream car now proposed in a synthesis of the vision of the three companies: exclusive design, sports DNA and technological innovation.
The Birdcage 75th, in homage to the spirit of the dream car era, is based on the road racing chassis of the Maserati MC12 and seeks to capture the ultimate expression of speed, sensuality and elegance — to create a functional and dynamic automotive sculpture.
Nicknamed the birdcage due to the radically triangulated tube construction of its chassis, these cars were truly unique in that the chassis and mechanicals were left in view under unusually large transparent front wind screens.

Filmed in L.A. and Florida, The Birdcage opened on March 8, 1996 and is by far Nathan's most successful movie (in which he appeared visually as well as through voice).
The Birdcage was the 7th highest grossing film in 1996.
"Birdcage II" was originally conceived as a political comedy involving Lane's cross-dressing character infiltrating the religious right in an attempt to sabotage the presidential aspirations of Gene Hackman's character.

A maze of ribald subterfuge gets kicked into high gear when their sweet, dull son announces his impending marriage to the daughter of an ultra-conservative senator (delightfully assayed by the ever-versatile Gene Hackman), who ventures with his family to Florida's den of queer iniquity for a friendly face-to-face with the inlaws.
"The Birdcage," scripted by Nichols' frequent collaborator Elaine May, is a spry and pleasing comedy aimed straight for middle America, not unlike "To Wong Foo," yet it's a tad better than that: its soul is a bit more ragged, as are its barbs.
Doubtfire." Still, "The Birdcage" is a sure bet for a plethora of GLAAD positive-image awards, a stamp of mediocrity that will surely satisfy some birds while leaving others desperate to fly the proverbial coop.

The Birdcage   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
After 20 years as a stage play, a film, a host of treacly sequels, and a Broadway musical, Jean Poiret's La Cage aux Folles has become the humane and hilarious comedy of morals it was always meant to be.
That's established in the opening shot, in which the camera zooms across the surf to the neon-jeweled club the Birdcage, where a revue of stunning transvestites sing "We Are Family" -- a theme that the film drives home with perhaps too much repetition.
It's a comedy in the classic sense of the term, one in which seeming opposites reconcile in laughter and love, a marriage feast in which a cross-dresser can say "That Bob Dole is gorgeous!" and no one will be offended.

The Birdcage : filmcritic.com Movie Review
The Birdcage, based fairly closely on La Cage aux Folles, achieves just that, memorably updating the earlier film's script with modern humor and a distinctly American setting.
Of course, bits and pieces are lacking in The Birdcage, most notably stuck-on subplots involving Val's real mother (Christine Baranski) and the tabloids coming after the gang, but on the whole the film is a hilarious modernization of its acclaimed predecessor.
And while The Birdcage isn't really what I'd call insulting to any particular group, don't expect any political correctness awards to be handed out for the film.

Seemingly respectable filmmakers are eagerly repackaging homosexuals as whining, pathetic drag queens for a culture disturbed by sex plagues and nose-ringed militants.
Nathan throws the drag aspect of the character away for the most part; it was more about creating a whole person." But this "whole person" is actually woefully incomplete — in "throwing away the drag part" he kills one of the story's major motifs: the sheer power of the character's hysterical personality.
In The Birdcage, Gene Hackman is not a convincing villain.

Lane is delicious here as the top billed female impersonator and star at Birdcage, a drag extravaganza club owned by his better half Williams.
Nichols brilliantly manipulates the plot (such as it is) to create a series of hilarious situations in which the Goldmans attempt to deceive the Keeleys and thereby not jeopardize their beloved son's marriage.
