Topic: Birders

Birdwatching - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The most active times of the year for birding in the temperate zones are during spring and fall migration, when the greatest variety of birds may be seen, as many species that do not nest or overwinter in given areas may be observed as they make their way north or south.
However, birders who are keen rarity-seekers will travel long distances to see a new species to add to the list of birds they have personally observed (life list, national list, state list, county list, year list, etc.).
Many birders take part in censuses of bird populations and their migratory patterns which are sometimes specific to individual species and sometimes count all the birds in a given area (as in a Christmas Bird Count).

 Birders
Until the early decades of this century, birders were more likely to "collect" specimens by shooting in order to identify birds "in the hand." The availability of high-quality optics and improvement in methods and guides for field identification have transformed birders from shooters to sighters.
Birders operate within a hierarchy of expertise and preference that distinguishes "dickie birders" and backyard birders from hawk watchers and birders with life lists of North American sightings exceeding 600 or 700 species.
Birders' expressed values include conservation of birds and preservation and creation of habitats, cooperative sighting and continuous study, benign interruption of birds' natural life, scrupulously honest and exquisitely detailed reporting.

Birders sticking beaks in - The Boston Globe
The arrival of these birds, which have not been seen here in recent years, is providing a new impetus for a group of birders who are challenging the refuge managers over a proposal to change this 100-acre, man-made freshwater marsh, turning it back into a saltwater marsh.
The refuge managers (part of the US Fish and Wildlife Service) say the plan is only being studied, but that has not stopped a group of birders -- many of whom have close ties with the refuge -- from banding together in hopes of influencing the final decision.
She admitted to being surprised by the intensity of the birders' concern.

 Birders’ Delight
Many birders are enthusiastic list keepers, maintaining multiple tallies, including bird species seen in one's life; in a year; on a specific day; in their backyard, local park, county, or state; or in specific countries.
There are many species of birders, from the casual backyard feeder watchers that like to count the Black-capped Chickadees at their bird baths, to those that visit rainforest lodges in Borneo to seek showier specimens like Blue-eared Barbets and Rhinoceros Hornbills.
Some birders say sharing their fascination with others may be the biggest thrill of all.

The Federal Duck Stamp Program: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
The initial crisis in 20th century bird conservation was addressed by the Lacey Act of 1900, the creation of Pelican Island in 1903 as the first Federal refuge in the country, and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.
An important step taken to address this crisis was the creation of the Federal Duck Stamp in the mid-1930s, an action which sough to strengthen a National Refuge System in desperate need of support.
Today, birders throughout the United States may gain free admission to every National Wildlife Refuge in the country by purchasing a $15 Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp (commonly known as a Federal Duck Stamp).

Renowned birders wing to Plymouth - The Boston Globe
The birders formed a loose flock on the sands of Plymouth Beach, not unlike the shorebirds that were sleeping and feeding amid a great migration which would take some of them as far as South America.
Writer and photographer Subhankar Banerjee, perhaps the least experienced birder in the group, was also perhaps the most enthusiastic, repeatedly saying "Wow, look at that" as he eyed the flocking plovers and terns.
The birders had timed their visit with high tide, and the shorebirds were high on the beach and easy to peruse.

NPWRC :: Birders and U.S. Federal Laws
A practice used by some birders to view hole-nesting birds is to repeatedly hit the side of a nest tree, causing the adult birds to leave the hole.
Excessive pressure by birders caused refuge personnel to cordon off an area of the refuge frequented by the grassquit to ensure some protection of both the vegetation and the grassquit.
We believe that the combined efforts of all birders in policing our own ranks is the most effective method to ensure that the birds which we all enjoy will remain numerous in perpetuity.

Mike's Birding & Digiscoping Blog: 82 Million Birders!
If we use this percentage against the population of Madison (around 200,000) we should have roughly 50,000 birders (the population of Dane County is closer to 453,000).
Come spring migration, when faithful birders hit the field in earnest, I can go to any number of a dozen or so birding "hot spots" in the Madison area and be lucky to find 5 to 20 birders who are actually doing what I consider birding to be.
A birder is one who "birds" or "goes birding" in a serious and energetic manner, whether to hone his or her field-identification skills or to amass an impressive list.

Capitalizing on Natural Resources of the Missouri Coteau
A birder is delighted to count the special northern plains species by ones, twos and threes.
When birders travel a long distance to add a bird to a life-list or see a species in breeding plumage, they hope to also find some other “target” birds or make an unexpected find - to see an accidental or other uncommon birds.
A birder enjoys finding and identifying a “new” bird in the same way that a hunter likes bagging a trophy or an art, antique or car collector enjoys making an unusual, rare or valuable find.

Twitchers are a variety of birders or birdwatchers dedicated to building a big lifelist
Contrary to some of the stereotypes about birders, most birders are highly sociable and spend a great deal of time discussion birding with other birders.
Most birders are twitchers to some extent, but the degree to which the ticking of new species is important is a personal thing.
Birders need to remember that birds are wild animals and disturbance should be kept to a mimimum.

Last weekend, birders spied a Eurasian wigeon, two great fl-backed gulls, an anhinga and a mountain chickadee.
