 Birdland History
When the original Birdland opened fifty-one years ago in December, 1949, Charlie Parker was the headliner and the club was located on Broadway, a few blocks west of 52nd Street, which was a hotbed of jazz in the 1930s and 40s.
Considering the excitement that Birdland generated on a daily basis, it's no surprise that the club attracted its share of celebrities.
Count Basie and his smokin' big band made Birdland their New York headquarters, eventually recording George Shearing's "Lullaby of Birdland" live at the club.

 Birdland
Still, the new Birdland endured, drawing on the city’s talent pool to fill its bandstand with the best musicians the situation would allow, and defying predictions that a jazz club so far from the music’s hub in Greenwich Village would fail.
It was in that atmosphere that Birdland reopened on West 44th Street in a space that would rival the best clubs in the city.
And since Birdland’s opening in midtown, the 42d Street redevelopment project has expanded west to Eighth Avenue, and new hotels seem to be rising daily on spaces that were once parking lots.

After the Massey Hall Concert, Parker continued to record and perform, attempted suicide twice (once after being fired from his namesake club, Birdland) and finally declined toward his death in the apartment of jazz patron Baroness Nica von Koenigswarter on March 12, 1955.

One of the most popular and influential poets of the late 1960s and early 1970s, Giovanni was raised in Knoxville and Cincinnati but made a name for herself in New York City by drawing a standing-room-only crowd to her first poetry reading at the jazz club Birdland in 1969.
Giovanni's work is also deeply subjective: "I wrote a good omelet...and ate a hot poem.../ after loving you." Springing from a strong commitment to African and African-American oral tradition, her voice is fierce, resilient, often celebratory and rooted in the vernacular of her community, whether she speaks as African American, woman, mother, writer or lover.
