Conclusions drawn in the BirdLife study were based on 114 criteria drawn in part from principles established in the FAO's 1995 Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, which is on the Committee's agenda for evaluation on its 10th anniversary.
The BirdLife review observes that populations of albatrosses, dolphins, sharks and turtles have plummeted, partly because many of the 19 Regional Fisheries Management Organizations governing the world’s seas are ignoring international laws requiring action to safeguard marine wildlife and tackle pirate fishing.

 Birdlife calls on government to withdraw derogation for hunting
BirdLife Malta had foreseen that the derogation would only serve as a loophole to allow the illegal massacre of protected birds and for the second Spring in succession was proved right.
BirdLife Malta was informed that 10 police officers have been assigned bird protection duties in Gozo and 28 police in Malta.
BirdLife Malta said that that these police are giving their worth in gold and doing their utmost to control the situation, but in the prevailing circumstances they were overwhelmed by the extent of the illegal hunting.

The UN has declared 2002 the year of the mountain, and Unep is supporting the Government of Kyrgyzstan in holding the Bishkek mountain summit, which is due to end on 1 November.
Szabolcs Nagy, BirdLife's European conservation manager, said: "Many of Europe's regionally threatened species, including the lammergeier or bearded vulture and the golden eagle, face the threat of regional extinction if the mountain systems they depend on in the Alps and Pyrenees continue to be over-exploited for winter sports and summer tourism.
Birdlife is using a website to argue for better protection of mountains through setting up reserves and promoting environmentally sustainable development which involves local communities.

 Threats to the environment posed by war in Iraq
In 1991 BirdLife International and RSPB (BirdLife in the UK) sent three teams of scientists to the Gulf region to collaborate with the National Commission for Wildlife Conservation and Development (BirdLife in Saudi Arabia) to assess the environmental impacts of the war and resulting toxic oil pollution.
Counts of dead seabirds including the globally threatened Socotra Cormorant along the northern Arabian Gulf coast of Saudi Arabia indicated that at least 30,000 wintering seabirds were killed by the Gulf War oil spills during January-April 1991.
[16/02/03] BirdLife International identified the main threats to the environment posed by war in Iraq in a dossier of information, maps and photographs sent to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (China, France, Russia, the UK and USA) and the Government of Iraq.
