Soon after she embarked on a world tour with Neil and Tim Finn, and it was during that tour that Runga's third album Birds - to be released on November 28 - got its wings.
Birds has been described as darker than Runga's previous work, with an inherent sadness, but this was not done by design.
Runga is constantly working on new material - "I'm writing a lot of the time, you don't need tools, you can just do it walking or sitting around" - and what comes next could be a virtual U-turn.

I admire her craft--much in evidence in her live performances as well as her albums--and her dedication to her work, in particular the way she seems constantly to be extending the limits of her taste, exploring new forms and styles.
Runga's vocal facility is often used to suggest or evoke an emotion rather than embody it; much of the emotional weight of these songs is carried in the production, the mix and the arrangements in particular.
Much of the album seems concerned with that which is lost, or may be lost, both in love and in life.

New Zealand export Bic Runga not only wrote everything on her debut, Drive, but also played guitar and xylophone, and even served as producer.
Using her engaging, childlike voice to full effect, Runga mostly ruminates on love lost and found, all within the confines of intelligent, adult alternative pop.
The arrangements are often sparse, as on "Drive," the violin-laced "Bursting Through," and "Suddenly Strange." She changes the pace a bit on the hypnotic "Swim," with Andrew Thorne adding some edgy guitar, and the country-tinged "Roll Into One," a plea for a lover to make his move.

Before forming Mutton Birds, singer Don McGlashan had been in post-punk pioneers Blam Blam Blam, theatrical folk duo the Front Lawn, the Auckland Symphony Orchestra (first euphonium) and scored the Jane Campion film An Angel at My Table.
The Mutton Birds establishes McGlashan as a first-class lyricist, able to tell stories using a variety of voices and viewpoints.
Pleasant and jangly songs (think Teenage Fanclub) with strict rhyme schemes like "Anytime Soon" and "Come Sunday" are very much in keeping with his contributions to the Mutton Birds, but "The Ballad of Wendi Deng," a country tune about Rupert Murdoch's wife, is a highlight.

By 1981, Neil was sharing lead-singer's duties in Split Enz; he wrote their first international hit, I Got You and contributed significantly to all their later albums, briefly assuming leadership of the band after Tim left in 1983.
When Split Enz broke up in 1984, Neil formed a new band called The Mullanes (Mullane was his mother's maiden name) with Split Enz drummer Paul Hester, guitarist Craig Hooper of The Reels and bassist Nick Seymour, younger brother of Hunters and Collectors leader Mark Seymour.
Hooper left just before they recorded their first album, at which time the band was renamed Crowded House, after the rented accommodation they shared while recording in Los Angeles.

Thanks to the advent of the adult alternative radio format, the Innocence Mission were able to break out to a wider audience with the release of their third album, 1995's Glow; material from the album appeared on the soundtrack of the film Empire Records and on the television show Party of Five.
