Birdsville came to importance in the 1880s when the drovers and station owners in western Queensland realised that moving cattle through the Channel country and down the Birdsville Track to the railhead at Marree (which had been opened in 1884) was the most efficient way to transport cattle to the coastal markets.
Birdsville's raison d'etre virtually disappeared with Federation in 1901 when interstate trade was freed and since then it has been declining in importance.
A word of warning: about 100 km down the Birdsville Track is a simple memorial to the Page family who in 1963, after their car had broken down on the road, tried to walk out.

The Birdsville Hotel, erected c1884, survives as an important link with the earliest establishment of pastoral settlement in the Diamantina district of far western Queensland.
The name Birdsville was not adopted until the 1885 survey, and is thought to have been suggested by Robert Frew, owner of Pandie Pandie Station, who also had a store and shop at the Diamantina Crossing, in reference to the profuse bird life of the district.
The earliest section of the Birdsville Hotel is likely to have been constructed in 1883 [possibly from stone quarried at a site about 16 kilometres from the town], as the first license for this hotel was issued to William Blair in that year.

DAVE BURGE: My connections with the Birdsville Track go back in that I saw the movie 'Back of Beyond' when I was a kid and Birdsville Track always fascinated me then.
You've got to get up the Birdsville Track and into the Birdsville pub because people think of it as one of the last, hardest to reach places in Australia, when in actual fact, it's not anymore.
There's often talk about bituminising the Birdsville Track but I really think it'll spoil it because the track is the track and that's what it's important about.
