In former years the track was of a very poor quality and suitable only for four-wheel drive vehicles, but it has been upgraded to a fullscale dirt road and is now a popular tourist route.
The area is extremely barren, dry and isolated, and anyone wishing to travel the track must carry fresh water, supplies, fuel, and spare parts for their vehicle with them in case of emergencies.
Birdsville is located in the Diamantina Shire, which has a population of 326 persons (Census 2001).

The town was renamed Birdsville by the owner of Pandie Pandie Station who was amazed by the diversity of birdlife which inhabited the area.
Birdsville came to importance in the 1880s when the drovers and station owners in western Queensland realised that moving cattle through the Channel country and down the Birdsville Track to the railhead at Marree (which had been opened in 1884) was the most efficient way to transport cattle to the coastal markets.
Birdsville's raison d'etre virtually disappeared with Federation in 1901 when interstate trade was freed and since then it has been declining in importance.

After landing and securing the aircraft first stop was the Birdsville Pub for a quick beer.

Birdsville, in the middle of nowhere with a population of about one hundred people, is the service centre for outlying pastoral properties.
By the end of the 1880s there was even talk of a railway to Birdsville and during the early part of 1891 a Royal Commission travelled from Hawker via Innamincka, Haddon Downs, Birdsville, Marree, Farina and Leigh's Creek to investigate the railway to Queensland.
