  Vladimír Birgus
Vladimír Birgus influences the Czech photography environment in a number of ways, as a photographer, publicist, photography historian, educator and organizer of many exhibitions.
Birgus’ photography is less and less narrative, and its communicative strength lies increasingly in visual aspects – colour, light and shadow, form.
Birgus is not simply using colour film instead of fl-and-white, however, but rather working with colours as independent visual components in order to accord a psychological and emotive impact to the photograph.

Vladimír Birgus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
This seems to be the case with Vladimir Birgus (1954) whose rich opus frequently linked with the tradition of the so-called "documentary" photography challenges, in truth, any thematic categorisation of photographic image into "documentary", "fashion", "landscape" or any other similar subclass.
One could say that Birgus is a photographer who is more of a "place-measurer", a topographer who maybe does not measure and record individual areas in order to functionally present them on a map or plan, but rather gives his creative contribution to better and deeper understanding of "topos".
Colour that Birgus has been increasingly using for the past twenty years makes it clear that the medium of photography has surpassed its limited documentary potential a long time ago and that it has become means of enriching our overwhelming visual culture.

Upravo tim i takvim prilogom Birgus stvara svoj putni "dokumentarni" opus, koji fascinira svojom nestvarnom zbiljom.
Bez obzira na katkad atraktivnu fotogeničnost zbilje i stvarnosti, njezina percepcija i doživljaj ipak se događaju na mentalnoj, to jest duhovnoj razini.
century Czech photography, Birgus started developing his unique style of subjective documentary photography already in the early stages of his career from the first half of the 1970s, if the category of documentary is suitable enough to include his visible sarcasm and irony by which he has been recording reality around him.

 Vladimír Birgus: Photographs 1992-2002
It is by no means simple to combine the profession of a photographer, a pedagogue, a theoretician and a curator in such a way that the author’s work as a photographer does not succumb to the influences and trends about which he writes and which he encounters in exhibition halls or during his pedagogical activity.
Similary as many other documentary photographers, Vladimír Birgus found his motifs in the streets of towns and in the course of the most varied festive occasions.
