  Birgunj - A popular Terai City of Nepal which lies near the Indian Border Raxaul
Birgunj is situated about 3 KM from the Indian northern border Raxaul.
Apart from a few tourists who actually go to Birgunj to see the city, the city is simply taken as a stop over place for travelers, businessmen and pilgrims going to other destinations in Nepal.
Birgunj has a railway to Raxaul, so it is connected to many cities in India.

Although, the preliminary agreement for operating the railway-based Birgunj ICD was already signed on November 07, 2003, the final endorsement by both the governments of India and Nepal to earlier agreement was recently concluded on May 21, 2004.

BIRGUNJ, May 23 - Farmers are no longer installing tubewells, wells, lift irrigation and spring callers here after the government stopped providing subsidy to farmers in installing small irrigation facilities since the current fiscal year.
Farmers were widely installing various small irrigation facilities due to the government’s policy of giving 30 per cent subsidy or grant to individuals and 60 per cent subsidy to groups who installed such facilities.
Mechanical Engineer Chuda Raj Timilsina of the bank said farmers were waiting to install irrigation facilities hoping that the government grant will be received again.

A prominent Nepali businessman was injured in a daring attack in broad daylight after he reportedly refused to pay money to a criminal gang operating from across the border in Bihar, India.
The attack triggered fear and outrage among businessmen in Birgunj with the Industrial and Commerce Union business lobby giving a 48-hour ultimatum to the local administration to arrest the culprits, the Himalayan Times daily reported.
Police also arrested three of the gang members, one of whom, identified as Sanjiv Mishra from Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh, admitted he was also involved in the kidnapping of two senior Indian government officials in 2004.

IANS Kathmandu Aug 4: Nepalese police have busted a gang from the eastern Indian state of Bihar that was reportedly behind the sensational kidnapping of two government officials late last year.
According to the Ankush daily, a newspaper published from Birgunj, Mishra claimed that he had connections in high places and was close to Indian Chemicals and Fertiliser Minister, Mr Ram Vilas Paswan.
