Birkbeck, sometimes referred to by its former name Birkbeck College or by the abbreviation BBK, is a College of the University of London.
The Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities was established in 2004, with the renowned but controversial Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek appointed as International Director.
Birkbeck's School of English and Humanities was rated 5* in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, as were the School of History, Classics and Archaeology, and the section for Spanish and Latin American studies within the School of Languages, Linguistics and Culture -- ranking these departments with, and in some cases above, Oxford and Cambridge.

George Birkbeck (1776-1841) was a doctor, academic, philanthropist and early pioneer in adult education.
Born to a Quaker family in Settle, North Yorkshire, Birkbeck went to school in Sedbergh and then completed his training as a doctor in Edinburgh in 1799.
The Mechanics Institute concept was quickly adopted in numerous other cities and towns across the UK and overseas, but his association with the ground-breaking London institution was marked by it being renamed the Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institution in 1866 (now, as Birkbeck College, part of the University of London).

In 1817 and 1818 Morris Birkbeck wrote two books, Letters from Illinois, and Notes on a Journey from the Coast of Virginia to the Territory Illinois, which helped to bring public attention to the Albion settlement and attract new immigrants.

Their classes could be taken as Birkbeck course unit modules, which can lead to a higher education qualification.

Administrative/Biographical history: Birkbeck College was founded as the London Mechanics Institution in 1823 with George Birkbeck (1776-1841) as the first President and the aim of instructing members "in the principles of the Arts they practise, and in the various branches of science and useful Knowledge".
In 1894 Birkbeck Institute was linked with the City of London College and the Northampton Institute (now City University) to form the City Polytechnic under a Charity Commission scheme approved in 1891 to facilitate funding for these institutions by the City Parochial Foundation.
The City Polytechnic was dissolved in 1906 and Birkbeck College made its first application to become part of the University of London in 1907; it had had recognised teachers, and therefore "internal" students, since 1900.
