During all this time there also existed the town of Birkenfeld, in contrast to the castle called Tal-Birkenfeld (Tal= Valley), which was focal point of the office, which reached from Traun to Siesbach.The place was situated closely around the church, which had has also a cemetery.
The Bishop of Trier was forced to reconstruct most of the church, from whose district he also received two-thirds from the "Fruchtzehnt" (=10% of the crop).
These processes were rare in Birkenfeld, but frequently there were protests against the old customs, which are today preserved and maintained (mummery, witch burnings in the night from the first of May, wheel shifting, etc.).

In history the Nahe River was a division line between two tiny principalities: Birkenfeld west of the Nahe, and Lichtenberg east of the river.
The principality of Birkenfeld was annexed by Oldenburg in 1817; Lichtenberg became an exclave of Saxony-Coburg[?].
After the World War I the southern half of Sankt Wendel had to be ceased to the Saarland territory, and the small part remaining in Prussia was then officially called Restkreis Sankt Wendel ("remaining district of Sankt Wendel").

Birkenfeld is a town and municipality, capital of the district Birkenfeld, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
In the 17/18th century Birkenfeld was capital of the Pfalzgrafschaft Birkenfeld, whose heir Maximilian I. Joseph inherited the electorates of Palatinate and Bavaria in 1799 and who became king of Bavaria in 1806.
From 1816-1937 Birkenfeld was capital of the Principalty of Birkenfeld which was part of the grand-duchy of Oldenburg.

Back in the early 1980’s, the area that Fishhawk Lake is located in was not within boundaries of any rural fire district and was therefore considered to be unprotected.
A prime example of a yearly event that the Mist-Birkenfeld Rural Fire Protection District paid employees and volunteers are heavily depended upon for help is the Hood to Coast run/walk that has approximately 12,000 total participants many of which will go along Hwy 202, for example.
There are several other programs either up and running or in the works, as the Chief is a big one for getting grants for our community to financially support programs and even new “turnouts” (uniforms) for our volunteers.
