The Birkenhead constituency comprises the town of Birkenhead and surrounding districts on the Wirral Peninsula.
Birkenhead lies on the opposite side of the River Mersey to Liverpool, and is linked to that great city by the world-famous ferries, which cross the river frequently from Woodside to the Pier Head, and by the Queensway Tunnel, which was opened by King George V in 1935.
Birkenhead is a busy town which is home to the rejuvenated shipbuilding industry of Cammell Laird and a new industrial park centred on Lairdside.

Birkenhead was still a small village when William Laird established a boilermaking and shipbuilding yard in the town in 1824, the forerunner of the immense Cammell Laird yards, and in 1829 the first iron vessel in the UK was built here.

When steamboats were introduced in 1817, Birkenhead became a centre for pleasure trips, and inhabitants on the north side of the estuary were encouraged to settle in Birkenhead and other parts of the Wirral peninsula.
