Birkenhead School is an Independent HMC school in Oxton, on the Wirral Peninsula in the UK for boys 3 months - 18 years, girls 3 months - 4 years and 16 - 18.
A record 54% of A levels this year at Birkenhead School were at grade A, significantly exceeding any improvement at national level.

Birkenhead was still a small village when William Laird established a boilermaking and shipbuilding yard in the town in 1824, the forerunner of the immense Cammell Laird yards, and in 1829 the first iron vessel in the UK was built here.

This was an excellent plan as it allowed the Bosun’s to see how the school was preparing the lads and also the Bosun’s brought in fresh ideas to the school and kept the training staff in touch with the latest developments on board ship.

The court was very evidently built by one of the families as it was in a very beautiful, sequestered part of the grounds adjacent to the potting sheds (which were lean-tos on the outside of the court).
That was written by another ex-pupil and concerned the history of the house and its owners which in 1920 became the school.
The courts were demolished in or around 1982 and in their place squash courts were built mainly for out of school hours use by Shell employees.

A temporary Council School in Birkenhead was opened by the Birkenhead Education Committee in April 1908.
This was one of six Central Schools established between the wars to take all pupils from local elementary schools at the age of 11.
Apparently years ago there was a fire at the school and one of the schoolteachers either committed suicide or was burned to death.

It was very different to Bromborough Prep, being the offshoot of the main public school to which I graduated later.
Everything was geared towards the entry exam for Birkenhead School, and all the teaching was directed towards this.
