It was built for the Birmingham Barons in 1910 by industrialist and team-owner Rick Woodward and has served as the home park for the Birmingham Barons and the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues.
Though the Barons have moved their home games to the suburbs, Rickwood Field has been preserved and is undergoing gradual restoration as a "working museum" where baseball's history can be experienced.
In 1987 the Barons moved to a new facility, (Hoover Metropolitan Stadium) in the suburb of Hoover, Alabama.

On Thursday, June 17th at 12:30 PM the Barons will revisit this era and the Industrial Baseball Leagues as they take on the Huntsville Stars at historic Rickwood Field for the 9th Annual Rickwood Classic presented by State Farm Insurance.
The Barons and Stars will don the uniforms of Industrial League teams that played in the 1930’s.
The Industrial Leagues in Birmingham consisted of teams sponsored by local businesses and the rosters were made up of the workers from those companies.

When manager Piper Davis penciled in his name on his lineup card as the left fielder and seventh-place batter for the Black Barons, the future superstar was a seventeen-year old high school student.
At the time Willie began his professional career with the Black Barons, he was called "Buck" by his friends, and it was not until years later that he became the "Say Hey Kid." When he joined the team it was obvioous that he could run and throw, but Davis saw beyond the basic raw skills.
In 1948, his first year with the Black Barons, he hit.262 with only 1 home run and 1 stolen base, but played well in the field during the regular season and in the ensuing Negro World Series in a losing cause.

Birmingham did not have a team in the Negro League for five years in the 1930's and he may have played for Birmingham in one of those years in the 1930's that they did not compete in the Negro League.

In Birmingham, one of the most segregated cities in the South, the promise of equality was still a long way off.
He and his family lived in a rooming house with fl baseball players from the Black Barons, Birmingham's Negro League team; Booker was a batboy for the team.
Like most fl children in Birmingham, Booker witnessed segregation in all facets of life: Blacks were not allowed to join white sports teams, they could not attend the same schools as whites or eat at the same restaurants, nor were they allowed to sit with whites in any public facility.

In 1944 the Black Barons repeated as NAL champions, but were again unable to overcome the Homestead Grays in the World Series.
During the Black Baron's reign as the premier team of the Negro American League during the 1940s Davis was recognized as the team's leader and most impressive player.
But, despite his impressive records posted as a player-coach, Davis' tenure as manager of the Black Barons was most highlighted by his signing a 16-year-old Willie Mays to a Black Barons contract.

It was during these years, that the Black Barons saw some of the team’s greatest players, the most notable being a lanky pitcher who called himself “Satchel.” Winning more than 2,000 games, Leroy (Satchel) Paige is widely considered among the greatest pitchers of all time.
