Birmingham is widely reputed to have more miles of canals than Venice - the upshot of a chance remark, believed to have been made by a British Waterways official, several years ago.
The interests of the BCN system are ably supported by members of the Birmingham Canal Navigations Society and both Birmingham and Lichfield branches of the Inland Waterways Association, collectively striving to promote usage of the system and constantly to monitor canalside developments.
The waterways of the BCN are all worthy of retention, but will rapidly decline and face ultimate consignment to the history books if we cannot demonstrate their full potential as living, cruising waterways.

Canal Junction Birmingham Canal Navigations, includes the Wryley and Essington canal, Rushall canal, Birmingham and Fazeley, Tame Valley canal, Stourbridge canal, Walsall canal, Dudley tunnel, Netherton tunnel.
Birmingham sits on a plateau about 200 feet above the surrounding countryside, and would probably have been passed by by early canals which were intent on linking the Rivers Trent and Mersey and Severn.
Although much of the BCN is urban there is a lot of pleasant countryside too, Castle Croft bridge (right) is on the Wryley and Essington Canal, known by boatmen as the 'curly whirly' because of its twisting route.

From Gas Street Basin in central Birmingham the route first follows a large loop, along the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal to Salford Junction, the Grand Union Canal to Kingswood Junction, the Stratford upon Avon Canal to Kings Norton and the Worcester and Birmingham Canal back to Gas Street Basin.
It then follows the Birmingham Canal and Dudley Canal (Birmingham Canal Navigations) to Brierley Hill, the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal to Aldersley Junction, and the Birmingham Canal back to Dudley.
Further sections of the Birmingam Canal Navigations -- the Walsall, Tame Valley, Daw End and Rushall and Wyrley and Essington canals -- are then used to finish at Chasewater.

 The Birmingham Canal Navigation
Birmingham was, until the 18th century, a small and relatively insignificant settlement on the banks of the River Rea.
The earlier, more winding canal is 473 ft asl; a rapid increase in traffic necessitated improvements in the early 19th century, engineered by Thomas Telford, and cut 20 ft lower.
It is much easier to get at than was the case in 1980, largely because of Birmingham City Council's support for the canal's recreational use and the efforts of it and of the BCN Society in making improvements.

A group of five of us took to the waters of the BCN in Water Admiral, a 60ft narrowboat hired from Water Travel of Autherley Junction in September 2001.
The area we covered many regard as the backwaters of the english canal system but what we found was mostly a picturesque, well maintained network with hardly any moving boats on it.
In fact we didn't see another moving boat for two whole days and only saw two other boats on the move for the whole of the time we were north of the "Main Line".

The Dudley Canals, the Pensnett, the Two Lock line, the Fens Branch, the Stourbridge extension and the Netherton area are included in this video. A look is taken at the tunnels in the area and the lost route through Lapal tunnel to Selly Oak.
Watch this video and you will see why the narrowboats of the BCN system deserve a detailed look. The BCN developed types of craft which were not found elsewhere, and in some cases were unable to leave the system.
