Birmingham (ˈbɝmɪŋˌhæm) is the largest city in the U.S. state of Alabama and is the county seat of Jefferson County.
Birmingham is located on the heart of a tornado alley known as the Dixie Alley due to the frequency of tornadoes in Central Alabama.
Birmingham is served by three Interstate Highways, Interstate 20, Interstate 65, and Interstate 59, as well as a southern beltway Interstate 459 and the Elton B. Stephens (Red Mountain) Expressway (U.S. Highway 31 and U.S. Highway 280).

Birmingham was originally part of Warwickshire, however the city expanded in the late 19th and early 20th century, absorbing parts of Worcestershire to the south and Staffordshire to the west.
Birmingham suffered heavy bomb damage during World War II during the Birmingham Blitz, and partly as a result of this the city centre was extensively re-developed during the 1950s and 1960s, with many concrete office buildings, ring-roads, and now much-derided pedestrian subways.
Birmingham's transition from an industrial centre to a tourism and services economy is best illustrated by the hosting of the first official summit of the G8 at the International Convention Centre (May 15 to May 17, 1998).

Peter Hessler (Chinese given name Ho Wei) was an American Peace Volunteer who went to work at a College in Fuling in Sichuan Province for 2 years in the late 1990's.
The book tells of his life during the two years - during which time he leant to speak Chinese fluently and so was able to make friends with the "ordinary local people".
