Established over 100 years ago, Birmingham Conservatoire is recognised as one of the major national colleges of music centering on performance and composition.
Sir Simon Rattle is the Conservatoire's President and Peter Donohoe is Vice-President.
In 1994 the Conservatoire opened a new extension with forty additional practice and teaching rooms, a new recording studio and lecture theatre, and a new library.

 Orsino String Quartet
He went on to study with Jill Thoday and Clive Lander at Birmingham Conservatoire, graduating in June 1998 with a First Class Honours Degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance in June 2000.
Prizes won at the Conservatoire include first prize in the Herbert Lumby String Prize and Tracey Colvin Award as well as taking part in the CBSO String Training Scheme, in which Chris rehearsed with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra throughout 1999-2000.

 SRB4 REGENERATION 4 BIRMINGHAM - SUCCESS TO DATE — Birmingham Community Safety Partnership
Between 1998 and 2005, 445,871 people, 167,432 of which were from minority ethnic groups, benefited from the programme in a wide variety of ways which made their lives safer and helped to reduce crime.

He is an associate conductor of the Birmingham Concert Orchestra a guest conductor of the Alveley Band in Shropshire.
A former student of the late John Mayer, Iain graduated from Birmingham Conservatoire in 2003 with a BMus(Hons) in Composition, having also studied for one year under the direction of Albanian composer Thoma Simaku and, more recently, with Andrew Downes.
At Birmingham Conservatoire, Iain also developed his skills in the field of conducting and musical direction and in 2002 he was awarded a Distinction for his tenure as Principal Conductor of the New Streetly Youth Orchestra (a period which saw recruitment levels rise to an unprecidented level and a full team of section tutors installed).

Students also benefited from the Conservatoire's excellent facilities including two concert halls, teaching studios with Yamaha grand pianos and over 50 practice studios.

Andrew Downes was born in Handsworth, Birmingham, in 1950.
He won a choral scholarship to St John’s College, Cambridge (in 1969), where he gained an MA degree specialising in composition and in 1974 went on to study with Herbert Howells at the Royal College of Music.
Between 1990 and 2005, he was Head of the School of Composition and Creative Studies at Birmingham Conservatoire and was awarded a Professorship in 1992.
