Birmingham's transition from an industrial centre to a tourism and services economy is best illustrated by the hosting of the first official summit of the G8 at the International Convention Centre (May 15 to May 17, 1998).

Birmingham has benefited so much in the past decade from regeneration investment, transforming the city centre into a cultural oasis.
Situated at Millennium Point, on the east side of Birmingham in the Digbeth area, the modern design of the vast, metallic looking building doesn’t really shout out what it is, and you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve simply passed a new college or council building.

Last Friday I took a trip to Birmingham where I visited the Thinktank, Birmingham’s museum of science.
Thinktank is a huge, new building that contains an IMAX cinema, a department of a local university and several floors of interactive science exhibits covering Birmingham's industrial heritage, present day scientific issues in biology and technology and a look at what the future may hold for us.
I'm glad to say that Thinktank is aware of the importance of presenter-led shows and seem to have the right combination of special effects and proper astronomy.

Originally, it was one of two engines used to pump water back up to the 491 ft summit level of the Birmingham Canal Navigation Company's canal at Smethwick, not far from the Soho Foundry where it was made.
In the 1820s, Thomas Telford constructed a new canal parallel to the old in a deeper cutting, at the 453 ft Birmingham Level, creating the largest man-made earthworks in the world at the time.
It is now at the Thinktank science museum at Millennium Point in Birmingham and is the oldest working engine in the world.

Thinktank, the main visitor attraction at Millennium Point, has ten galleries over four floors and more than 200 interactive exhibits, many of them unique - including eMo the emotional robot that learns human expressions as it interacts with visitors.

Thinktank is Birmingham's unique and award-winning museum of science and discovery housed at Millennium Point.

With a vibrant and exciting new name and splendid new premises in a development area on the edge of Birmingham city centre Thinktank is a splendid example of what a lavish infusion of lottery money can do to reinvigorate an old and well loved museum.
Still, the exhibits are what one goes for and so far as stationary steam engines are concerned Birmingham has some of the best.
Narrow gauge railway enthusiasts will be pleased to know that although the three locos previously on display could not be found room for at Thinktank they have all found new homes on long term loan and one of them, Leonard, is now steamed regularly at the Abbey Pumping Station in Leicester.
