The Birmingham Tornado was a tornado event that occurred on April 8, 1998 striking the western part of Jefferson County, Alabama, near Birmingham, and continuing into neighboring St.
The tornado's effects were noticed around the same time by the ABC 33/40 Birmingham tower camera, which was pointed toward the western suburbs.
Debris from the tornado was scattered across central Alabama as far north as sections of Blount County.

The Birmingham Tornado was the strongest tornado recorded in the United Kingdom in nearly 30 years, occurring on 28 July 2005 in the suburbs of Birmingham.
The tornado struck at approximately 2.30pm BST in the Sparkbrook area of the city, also affecting King's Heath, Moseley and Balsall Heath as it carved a kilometre-long path through the city.
The Met Office has esimated that the tornado had either a T3 or a T4 rating on the TORRO scale, which would mean wind speeds between 93 and 130 mph, equivalent to a high-end F1 or low-end F2 on the Fujita scale.

The tornado was estimated at T4-5 on the T-scale of tornado intensity, with winds possibly exceeding 140mph.

The tornado tracked no further than 150 meters from me (confirmed by damage track) and moved to my west and then to my north – It crossed the train track about 550 meters to my north and felled 3 trees which fell across the track, thus blocking the line.
Note# I showed Paul a number of tornado drawings from the “Storm chaser Manual (Tim Marshall, 1998 USA) and he identified this tornado as  “sheathed” tornado – that is a strong single vortex with numerous satellite vortex around it.
When I asked Paul about the timing to the tornado he referred to the station logbook entry that he made at the time..

It was recognized by the American Scientist Dr. Ted Fujita (who devised the F-Scale) that the UK has more tornadoes per unit area than any other country in the world.
It said on the news that woth 20 minutes of it striking that looters were in teh damaged homes and arrests were made.
Anyway I was around the area (not in the eye of the storm), but it rained incredibly hard and went really dark.

There are reports that several roofs have been ripped off of houses in the Small Heath and Sparkbrook areas of Birmingham by what's being described as a mini toranado.
Just listening to the radio, aparently there may have been more in other parts of the country, maybe Peterborough, missed the other one though, my music was playin too loud.
Wow, we had a tornado a few years back...here in rural Connecticut, USA, it "hopped" right over my neighbor's house and threw a 40 foot tree onto their roof!!! it was surprising, we NEVER get tornados! as far as i know, they dont havem often in britain either!

Tonight, all was peace and quiet, and you'd never have known it had happened unless you stumbled on the epicentre streets.
This tornado peaked at around 130mph, the strongest gale i've encountered is around 75mph (guess), and i had to lie flat and then slide down the mountain on all fours as vegetation flew past my head in all directions...
