Vulcan statue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Vulcan statue of Birmingham, Alabama, is the largest cast iron statue in the world and the symbol of the city.
Vulcan was eventually re-erected at the Alabama State Fairgrounds, but the statue's arms were installed incorrectly, and he was without his spear, which had been lost en route from St. Louis.
Vulcan was removed during 1999 for a $14 million renovation process that saw the park and pedestal restored to its original 1938 appearance.

Birmingham Americans - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1975 entry in the WFL was known as the Birmingham Vulcans.
When the league folded, Birmingham, and Memphis, attempted to get admitted into the NFL for the 1976 season, although unlike the similar and more extensive effort in Memphis which involved actual cash deposits toward season tickets it seemed to consist mainly of getting fans to sign a "statement of support" somewhat similar to a petition.
When the Memphis effort failed, Vulcans followers were forced to accept the inevitable as well, and efforts to get the team admitted as an NFL franchise were abandoned.

To celebrate Birmingham's centenary, the area around the statue was given a million-dollar facelift in 1971.
Vulcan was removed during 1999 for a $14 million renovation process which saw the park and pedestal restored to its original 1938 appearance.
The city's entry in the World Football League, The Birmingham Vulcans[?] was named for the statue, though often assumed incorrectly to be a reference to the race of Vulcans on Star Trek.

I'm not sure whether the Vulcans are associated with the Americans of 1974.
I suspect the Vulcans used gray facemasks that were painted blue (see the Philadelphia Bell below), and the paint had worn off when some photos were taken, or some players never had the masked painted in the first place.

As I grew up the Ams and Vulcans were relegated to the archives of my “football mind” until I happened upon a picture in an antique shop.
I looked at it for a bit then realized it was a color picture of The Americans vs. Florida Blazers in the World Bowl in 1974.
I was gleeful that night and it began a quest, of sorts, for more information, pictures, film footage, etc. on the old team.
