 Anchor Birmingham Post article
Birmingham's hush-hush underground telephone exchange came off the secret list yesterday - because it is now obsolete.
The Birmingham underground exchange, the biggest of the four is packed with exchange equipment and does a valuable task in the handling 250,000 automatic calls a day.
But the nuclear capability of the 1950's was vastly inferior to the weapons of destruction that could be unleashed today and the Post Office now realises it's system of underground centres is obsolete.

While Paul Simon laboured for five years on the Capeman musical, which closed in February after little more than a month, Garfunkel has been more productive than at any other time in his musical career, post Simon and Garfunkel.
In the 28 years since the break-up of their musical partnership it is Art Garfunkel who has had to live for much of the time in the considerable shadow of his diminutive friend Paul Simon.
He's just about to embark on a a British tour in aid of cystic fibrosis, the third time in three years he'll have been seen in Britain, compared with just twice in the previous 25.

Prof Barratt, who is also head of the reproductive medicine and genetics research group at the University of Birmingham and a member of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, said he could see “both sides of the fence”.
Dr Gillian Lockwood, director of the Midland Fertility Clinic, and Professor Christopher Barratt, scientific director of the assisted conception unit at Birmingham Women’s Hospital, said the Government proposals would worsen the existing donor shortage.
New laws removing the anonymity of sperm and egg donors will have a devastating impact on childless couples desperate to conceive, two of the country’s leading fertility experts said.

 Birmingham's Post War Black Immigrants
Birmingham Corporation bus workers in an attempt to persuade them to accept coloured workers for platform duties...The services of coloured men and women had been neglected although there were 860 vacancies for conductors, it is probably the worst case of the colour bar in the country.
Birmingham like some areas of London, has been for some time attracting fairly considerable numbers of Jamaican immigrants.
Employers and trade union branches have also shown admirable breadth of mind by making it possible for coloured men and women to get work; the Methodist Church have appointed a full-time missioner to coloured people; and Fircroft College are carrying out a prolonged study on coloured employment for the Birmingham Christian Social Council.

 Review
Review of the November 25 Fleetwood Mac concert in Birmingham, UK at the NEC Arena.
Rock's longest running soap opera and many-headed rock dinosaur Fleetwood Mac rolled into the NEC last night and the packed-to-the-gunnels stadium greeted them with a rapturous reception.
OK we missed Chris McVie’s catchy pop numbers and smoky soft vocals but with Buckingham and Nicks splitting the spotlight two ways now and both so obviously returned to the peak of their powers, I’m glad dinosaurs still roam the earth.

The owner called me that afternoon, we agreed on a price, so I informed my wife that we were eating out that evening, then we made the hour drive back to Birmingham to pick up the picture.
I suppose the biggest thing that I remember was the feeling that I had a pro football team to cheer for that belonged to my friends and me. It was great being a devout Alabama Crimson Tide fan as well as cheering for Birmingham.
As I grew up the Ams and Vulcans were relegated to the archives of my “football mind” until I happened upon a picture in an antique shop.

I am able to remember four different Birmingham Post Offices.
After moving from the Maple-Pierce intersection, the Post Office was operated in a spot directly below the pointing finger behind the electric pole which appears to sprout from the roof of a passing auto.
