  Kiribati Travel Tips - Phoenix Islands
Hull Island, in the Phoenix Group, is located 249 nautical miles south of the equator, 60 miles west of Sydney Island, and 145 miles eastward of Gardner Island.
The Island is an atoll, consisting of a narrow rim of land, averaging less than 1/4 mile wide, surrounding a lagoon with depths of 50 to 60 feet.
The island is surrounded by a fringing reef, about 50 yards wide, behind which to a height of 15 or 20 feet rises a steep beach, partly sandy and partly covered with sandstone slabs and coral rubble.

Formerly known as the Phoenix Islands, the group name was changed in 1979 when they became part of the then newly independent nation of Kiribati — which also includes the Gilbert Islands, Line Islands and the solitary island of Banaba.
Birnie (with an area of 0.2 km²) is the smallest of the Rawaki islands, located 90 km east of Rawaki, measuring 1.2 km by 500 m, with a centrally located hypersaline lagoon.

The islands' recorded history really begins with the whalers of the early 1800s, when the waters around the Phoenix Islands were a prime area for sperm whale hunting, and whaling ships were often in the area.
A number of the Phoenix Islands were mined for guano in the mid-1800s, but supplies were exhausted there earlier than in the rest of Kiribati, and the miners departed after a few years.
Birnie Island, Rawaki, and Manra were designated bird sanctuaries in 1938 and wildlife sanctuaries in 1975 and have been mostly left to nature.

It is located 215 nautical miles south of the equator, near the center of a circle of five other Phoenix islands: 44 miles south of Canton, 42 miles southwest of Enderbury, 50 miles west of Phoenix, 56 miles in a direction 20 degrees west of north from Sydney, and 66 miles northeast of Hull.
McKean Island lies 150 miles due west, and Gardner Island is 200 miles in a direction 20 degrees south of west.
In 1899 the island was leased to the Pacific Islands Co. In 1916 it was included among the islands leased for 87 years to Captain Allen of the Samoan Shipping and Trading Company.

Ian Birnie said during the monthly "Big Island Business Forum" on radio station KPUA that using an Australian-built "superferry" could improve interisland travel and get produce to the market at cheaper prices.
Birnie noted that the ferry could travel from Honolulu to Hilo in five hours at a speed of 40 knots, or about 35 mph.
Currently, farmers must get their produce to a Big Island port, send it on a voyage to Honolulu that can take up to 30 hours, and coordinate ground transportation on Oahu.

There are lots of other possible kayak treks in the Thirty Thousand Islands, ranging from novice trips in The Massasauga Provincial Park to a two-week, 200 mile trek from Killarney (at the North end of the Bay) to Waubushene (at the Southeast corner of the Bay).
