Birr (Biorra in Irish) is a town in the Midlands county of Offaly in Ireland.
The early monastery founded in Birr by St Brendan of Birr produced the Gospels of McRegol, named after the abbot at the turn of the 8th/9th century and now to be seen in the Bodleian Library in Oxford.
Birr Castle is the oldest inhabited home in the county.

With 30 first class artistes, chorus and orchestra, the people of Birr were treated to Maritana, Carmen, The Lily of Killarney, Il Trovatore and The Daughter of the Regiment - all for the sum of three shillings (19 c) per night.
Birr people still recall the dances held there; many have their own romantic memories and perhaps occasionally wish for a return to the nights of the Practice Dances and Supper Dances of a bygone age.
Fortunately, Birr was declared a Heritage Town in 1993 and a group of people under the chairmanship of Salters Sterling undertook to purchase the building.

Kendall A. Birr, professor emeritus of history, passed away Dec. 26, 2004 at the age of 80.
Born in Illinois, Birr earned a degree in electrical engineering at Michigan State, a bachelor’s in history and political science at Cornell College in Iowa, and a master’s in history at the University of Wisconsin.
Birr’s survivors include his son, Christopher; three grandchildren; a brother; and several nieces and nephews.

During the 1840's and starting from virtually first principles, the third Earl of Rosse designed and had built the mirrors, tube and mountings for a 72 inch reflecting telescope which was the largest in the world at that time and remained so for three quarters of a century.
He was the eldest of three sons, all of whom were educated at home in Birr by private tutors rather than being sent to public schools in England.
Despite this telescope being "home-built" (the mirror was cast in the grounds of Birr Castle) two contemporary expert observers confirmed it's quality and performance, which allowed significantly increased resolution of stellar objects, one of them (Dr. Thomas Robinson of the Armagh Observatory) calling it the most powerful instrument of it's time.
