The Birth of a Nation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The film's controversy is in its premise that the Ku Klux Klan arose to restore order to the post-war South, as it was "endangered" by "uncontrollable" African American denizens and their allies, abolitionists, mulattos and carpetbagging Republican politicians from the North.
It is still studied by film and cultural historians alike, and in 1992 the United States Library of Congress deemed it "culturally significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.
The message embedded in the film was that Reconstruction was a disaster, that African Americans could never be integrated into white society as equals, and that the violent actions of the Ku Klux Klan were justified to reestablish honest government, said University of Houston film historian Steven Mintz.

Film scholars agree, however, that it is the single most important and key film of all time in American movie history - it contains many new cinematic innovations and refinements, technical effects and artistic advancements, including a color sequence at the end.
The propagandistic film was one of the biggest box-office money-makers in the history of film, partly due to its exorbitant charge of $2 per ticket - unheard of at the time.
Ironically, although the film was advertised as authentic and accurate, the film's major fl roles in the film -- including the Senator's mulatto mistress, the mulatto politican brought to power in the South, and faithful freed slaves -- were stereotypically played and filled by white actors - in flface.

Oddly, the film pulls back on a kissing scene that occurs later and is potentially more shocking — if the kiss had occurred within the bath scene, it would have been much more effective.

Organica News -- Film: The Birth of a Nation
The Birth of a Nation is based on the novel and play The Clansman, by Rev. Thomas A. Dixon, who reportedly suggested the grander, new title to Griffith.
His films The Musketeers of Pig Alley (1912) and The Mother and the Law (1914) focused respectively on social abuses in urban settings and factories—quite remarkable for a medium generally considered by audiences and industry executives as mere one- and two-reel entertainment.
The Birth of a Nation immediately accomplished two tasks: it encouraged the rebirth of the long-dormant Ku Klux Klan, a fact which later embarrassed Griffith and shamed the nation, and it also gave birth to the modern civil rights movement.
