The abbey itself - which was actually a priory for most of its life - stood alongside and must have dominated the estate in its day.
The building we now refer to as the Abbey was not even part of the monastic buildings like so many Tudor mansions which succeeded the redundant enclaves.
Bisham Abbey is one of the UK's National Sports Centres.

In Elizabethan times Lady Hoby (pronounced Hobby) of neighbouring Bisham Abbey was responsible for the building of the Hoby chapel to house the magnificent tomb of the Two Knights, her husband Sir Thomas and his half-brother Sir Philip.
At the joint cost of Mr Powell and Mr G H Vansittart, patron of the living and the then owner of Bisham Abbey, the church was reconstructed in the Decorated style, the chancel extended by ten feet, and two roofs replaced the one flat span ceiling.
The centre light at the base of this window shows Bisham Abbey supported by angels, and is flanked by the coats of arms of its various owners - the Thomas Montacute mentioned above; Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury and father of Warwick the Kingmaker; and the Hoby and Vansittart-Neale families.

While Bisham Abbey is due to be chosen largely on the strength of its present sports and medical set-up, facilities specifically for cricket - notably pitches of all kinds - will have to be developed and maintained.

Bisham Abbey, which features in the Domesday Book was never the abode of monks or nuns.
The building incorporates parts of Bisham Priory, which was founded by the Knights Templar in 1338 and had the distinction of being the only monastery to be re-established as an abbey by Henry VIII after the dissolution.
The Abbey played host to both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I and there have been many sightings of the ghost of Lady Elizabeth Hoby, said to have beaten her own child to death.

He was buried first at Pontefract, but his son transferred his body to the family mausoleum at Bisham Abbey and erected this effigy.
It was brought to Burghfield after the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
The effigy of a lady alongside him wears a headdress which is not thought to be of the right date to be his wife, but she may be one of the earlier Countesses of Salisbury buried at Bisham.
