  Bishop's Stortford - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bishop's Stortford is a particularly affluent area and this is partly due to the town's status as a commuter town for the (mainly financial) workers in London, the town is also home to many working in the tourist related industry, (hotels, catering, airline staff) because it is the closest large town to Stansted Airport.
Bishop's Stortford is reached by junction 8 of the M11 motorway, which also goes from London to Cambridge, meaning the town is a frequent stop-off point for travellers using the airport.
Bishop's Stortford is the birthplace of Cecil Rhodes, born in 1853 and the effective founder of the state of Rhodesia, De Beers diamond company and the Rhodes Scholarship.

The settlement was called 'Bishop's' because in the Middle Ages it belonged to the Bishop of London.
Bishop's Stortford was mainly an agricultural community but from the 15th century there was a tanning industry in the town.
Bishop's Stortford began to grow more rapidly after 1769 when the River Stort was made navigable.

This is the result of a man-made embankment constructed in the 1860s to take the road over the Bishop’s Stortford to Braintree branch line.
This bridge was the first of only two ‘under’ bridges built in Bishop’s Stortford to accommodate the branch line, the other at Church Manor having already been mentioned.
The original paint scheme was green for both this and the Bishop's Stortford cold stores, although a half-hearted attempt has been made to paint half this building blue.
