Bathurst (population in 1901, 9,223) was founded in 1824.
In 1865 Bathurst, then part of the Diocese of Sydney, was made the cathedral centre of a new diocese, which extended from the River Murray to Queensland, and from the Blue Mountains to the border of South Australia.
Its first bishop was the Right Rev. Matthew Quinn, who had taken an active part in organizing the Irish Brigade that fought for the defence of the Papal States in 1860.

Bathurst was a man of eminence, President of Trinity College Oxford, chaplain to the king, fellow of the Royal Society and one of the foremost scientists of his day.
The saintly bishop Thomas Ken was appointed in 1685, the year of Monmouth's rebellion when puritan soldiers again wrought havoc in the cathedral and turned part of it into a stable.
Bishop Kidder who succeeded him was killed during the great storm of 1703 when two chimneystacks in the palace fell on the bishop and his wife asleep in bed.

The local Inuit, known as the Kingaunmiut or "people of the 'Nose Mountain'" (after a local landmark), are co-owners of Bathurst Inlet Lodge and proudly involved in its operation.
They lived in igluit in the winter, hunting seals on the sea ice, fishing at the river mouths in spring and fall, and traveling inland in the summer to hunt the caribou at the inland lakes and on the crossing places (nadlok) on the rivers.
Visiting Bathurst Inlet is like stepping forty years back in time; it provides a picture of the arctic as it was, when people lived together in very isolated little communities working hand in hand with the local people.

Born in the French province of Alsace in 1872, Gsell trained for the priesthood in France and Italy and was ordained in 1896.
He gained government approval for the establishment of a mission on Bathurst Island in 1911, and lived on the island as head of the mission from that time until 1938.
Attempts to introduce Christianity to the Aboriginal residents of the island were only moderately successful, but Gsell did influence a modification to the local culture by intervening in the practice of young teenage girls being sold into marriages with the old men of the community.
