Walter Skirlaugh is said (and Leland quotes the tradition) to have been the son of a sieve-maker; but it seems highly probable that the tradition arose from the bearing on the man's shield of arms - six ozier-wands interlaced.
Skirlaugh was educated at Durham House in Oxford, became Bishop of Coventry & Lichfield in 1385, was translated to Bath & Wells in 1386 and finally removed to Durham, two years later.
Bishop Skirlaugh was buried in the north choir-aisle of his cathedral at Durham.

A FORMER administrator at Coventry Cathedral's International Centre for Reconciliation has had his clergyman's licence revoked after accusations of indecent behaviour were made against him, it emerged this week.
Coventry Diocese spokesman Reverend Mervyn Roberts said the Bishop was made aware of concerns relating to inappropriate behaviour by Mr Roper with teenage girls, but declined to go into any details.
Mr Roper was deaconed in Coventry in 2000 and made a priest in 2001.

Coventry's message is a timely one for me, preoccupied with forgiveness as I have never been before.
She implied that the bombings of Coventry and Dresden canceled each other in equivalent blame, as if there were no original fault, no first blow thrown.
The bishop of Coventry had urged Basil Spence "to design an altar and build a church around it." But the unremarkable altar, built of fl marble and dwarfed by the Graham Sutherland tapestry, seems to me the least imposing part of the new cathedral.

CHRIST CHURCH, situated in the angle of Union Street and Warwick Lane, was built in 1830- 32 and incorporated the 14th-century tower and spire of the former Greyfriars church.
It was designed by Paull and Robinson, the architects of All Saints, (Footnote 7) and is built of red sandstone in the Gothic style, comprising chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, transepts, a north porch, and a double bell-cote at the north-west angle containing one bell.
It was to be served by a perpetual curate with the Bishop of Worcester as patron.

Walter was almost certainly the son of John De Grey I of Eaton in Norfolk, though the family was particularly associated with the Castle of Rotherfield Greys in Oxfordshire, which Walter eventually purchased, from a cousin, for his brother, Robert.
Many other appointments followed; and, in 1288, he was elected Bishop of Coventry & Lichfield by the Lichfield Chapter, in opposition to the nominee of the monks of Coventry.
The whole country was in a state of sullen indignation and, on the dissolution of the Parliament, the Archbishop retired to the Bishop of London's Palace at Fulham.

At the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, the church was closed and given to the Mayor and Corporation of Coventry.
The saying 'sent to Coventry', stems from the hostile reception given to the soldiers by the local people, meaning that someone is being treated coldly or ignored.
Following the restoration in 1660 of the monarchy, the building fell into a state of neglect and a local textile manufacturer is said to have used it as a 'Stretch Yard'.
