Thirty-five bishops occupied the See of Dunkeld from its foundation in 1107 until the extinction of the ancient hierarchy in the sixteenth century.

Bishop James Livingston died in the August of 1483, and the Chapter got in first with their candidate.
From this came the proverbial saying, ‘Ye are like the Bishop of Dunkeld, that kent neither the new law nor the auld.’ Bishop Crichton died in 1559, and was succeeded by his nephew, Robert Bishop.

The first bishop was Harold, chaplain of the Bishop of Dunkeld, chosen on account of his acquaintance with the Gaelic tongue.
Bishops of the Isles, the last being Roderick Maclean, who died in 1553.
Bishop (1906), the second since the restoration of the hierarchy, is the Right Rev. George Smith, who was consecrated in his pro-cathedral at Oban, in 1893.

Engraved on the orb was a Latin inscription - Georgius Creichton Episcopus Dunkeldensis - George Creichton Bishop of Dunkeld.
Permission was given by the Church of England for the lectern to appear in "Angels, Nobles and Unicorns"- an exhibition of mediaeval Scottish art at the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland in Edinburgh.
This Victorian lectern was a replica of the Dunkeld one.

Of the ancient house of Kennedy of Denure, he was a son of Lady Mary, daughter of King Robert III, and was therefore a cousin of James II, then reigning in Scotland.
After studying on the Continent, he was appointed Bishop of Dunkeld in 1438, and Abbot of Scone soon afterwards, and in 1440 he succeeded Henry Wardlaw as Bishop of St Andrews.
Appointed chancellor in 1444, he showed himself a vigorous reformer of the civil and ecclesiastical abuses rampant in Scotland, and consequently incurred the enmity of many of the nobles.

Dwellers near the Cathedral of which he became Bishop can heartily endorse his objection to the hideous clamour of night when these "hornyt birds" wail their secrets to each other within the roofless walls and behind the gaping windows.
It is one of a block near the Cathedral gate, which survived the disastrous fire at the Battle of Dunkeld in 1689, and is easily recognised by the massive door.
After dinner, Bishop Douglas consulted the gentlemen and clergy who were present as to the course he ought to follow.

The last Bishop of Dunkeld was John Hamilton who succeeded Dr Andrew Bruce in 1686.
Dr Drummond, Bishop of Brechin was first designated as his successor but declined the appointment on the grounds that in his opinion the Bishopric was not vacant.
His period in office was short, for by 1688 James had fled the country and all the bishops in Scotland were dismissed.

The catholic priest, Sir John Forret, for permitting whom to administer the sacrament of baptism at Swinton in 1573 the Bishop of St. Andrews was complained against (Calderwood, History, iii.272), was probably a near relative.
This innocent instance of devout gratitude on the part of the bishop gave rise to the proverb in Scotland: "Ye are like the Bishop of Dunkeld that knew neither the new law nor the old law." Forret systematically warned his parishioners against the sellers of indulgences.
He also took care specially to teach them the ten commandments, and composed a short catechism for their instruction on points of prime importance in Christian belief.

 Engravings in 'Old and New Edinburgh'  - The Black Turnpike
The building behind the Guard-House, standing to the west of the Tron church is the Black Turnpike, reported to have been a sumptuous building, built in 1461.
It belonged to George Crichton, Bishop of Dunkeld in 1527.
It was the town mansion of the provost of Edinburgh in 1567, and the building from which Mary Queen of Scots was brought, prisoner.

Malcolm Can More's son Alexander I (reigned 1107-1124) appointed the Culdee clergymen Cormac, a great-great-grandson of MacBeth, as the first diocesian Bishop of Dunkeld.
It is from this Cormac that Macmillans descend.
The third son of Cormac, Bishop of Dunkeld, was named "Gillie Crisosd" (Gillchrist), or "Servant of Christ".

In those early years of the 20th century the Birnam and Dunkeld railway station was the most northernly point of the service!
This fine cathedral, parts of which now lie in ruins, was the richest and most important diocese of the Bishop of Dunkeld, a post of considerable seniority in the hierarchy of the Church.
Its magestic form still dominates the town today, idyllically surrounded by lawns which sweep gently down to touch the river's edge.
