Pope John Paul II appointed the diocese's auxiliary bishop Joseph Anthony Ferrario, a former Sulpcian educator and diocesan priest, as the third Bishop of Honolulu on May 13, 1982.
Bishop Ferrario was known for his proactive ministry to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons in the diocese.

Clarence “Larry” Silva as the fifth bishop of Honolulu.
Not only is he the first bishop of Honolulu to be ordained and installed during the same ceremony, but he is also the first Honolulu-born priest to be named bishop of the diocese since it was established in 1941.
Silva was born in Honolulu in 1949 and is of both Portuguese and Mauian heritage.
