Bishop Arthur Roche STL was born in Batley, West Yorkshire on 6th March 1950, the youngest child of the late Arthur and Frances Roche.
Bishop Roche was educated at St Joseph's primary school, Batley Carr, St John Fisher high school, Dewsbury and Christleton Hall, near Chester before he embarked on his studies for the priesthood in 1969.
During 2001-02 Bishop Roche served as chairman of the Pastoral Affairs Committee of the Diocese of Westminster as well as the Diocesan Finance Committee and the Catholic Children's Society in Westminster.

I warmly congratulate the Diocese of Leeds on the appointment of Bishop Arthur Roche as Coadjutor Bishop.
Bishop Roche was born in Batley Carr, Yorkshire on 6th of March 1950.
From September 1982 to January 1986 he was appointed as an assitant priest at the Cathedral in Leeds, becoming the Financial Secretary in August 1986, in fact he was the last Priest Financial Secretary for the Diocese the job is now done by a lay person.

Bishop Arthur Roche, president of ICEL and chairman of the Liturgy Committee for the bishops' conference of England and Wales, succeeds Bishop David Konstant as head of the diocese of Leeds, England.
Bishop Roche, former auxiliary bishop of Westminster and former secretary of the Liturgy Committee, was made co-adjutor bishop of Leeds in 2002.
The bishop-elect was born in Paisley in 1938 and was ordained priest in 1961.

By Leeds, I am referring to the diocese in England served by the Right Reverend Arthur Roche, who delivered a bold and stunning speech to the USCCB yesterday in advance of their vote on the new English translation of the Mass.
It seems that his words helped the bishops to move forward with approving the new translation (albeit with 62 amendments).
If the bishops of the English-speaking countries can agree on a single version of the Mass, what a sign of catholicity that will be.

Early in the meeting we were privileged to be addressed by the Most Rev. Arthur Roche, Bishop of Leeds, England, Chairman of ICEL (the International Commission on English in the Liturgy).
Bishop Roche reminded us that the translators back then clearly were focused on bringing the liturgy closer to the people.
The International Commission on English in the Liturgy is a mixed commission of Catholic bishops’ conferences in countries where English is used in the celebration of the sacred liturgy according to the Roman rite.

However, Bishop Packer also emphasises that both he and the Bishop of Knaresborough will continue to exercise their Episcopal ministry across the length and breadth of a diocese which covers 1359 square miles from south Leeds to the south-western tip of County Durham.
He has become a member of the national Rural Bishops' Panel and is settling into living in Exelby, outside Bedale, convenient for the A1 and also in the heart of the countryside in the north of the diocese.

Though one ancient Bishop of Ripon is known, the modern diocese dates from 1836.
The Bishop lives in Bishop Mount, a 7-bedroom 19th century house just north of Ripon, which was purchased and extended by the diocese in the 1940s when the original palace was decided to be too large.

Bishops Vigneron and Blair were appointed by Bishop Arthur Roche, Chairman of ICEL, on the recommendation of Cardinal Francis George, O.M.I., USCCB representative to ICEL and former chairman of the Committee on the Liturgy.
The Conference of Bishops is in the process of considering the ICEL translation, having sent amendments and comments on a draft translation of it to ICEL in June, 2004.
The ICEL translation is pending consideration by the Conference of Bishops.
