The Bishop of Sheffield, the Rt Revd Jack Nicholls, said on Wednesday that the current Church of England code of practice on child protection "would stand up to any examination by secular institutions, and has been carefully worked out in each parish".
Bishop Nicholls had first-hand experience of dealing with a known paedophile two years ago when the offender, who had been gaoled for sexually assaulting choir boys, was banned from the cathedral and other church services across the diocese at which children were present.
Under the House of Bishops guidelines, every parish is expected to have an agreed policy on child protection, particularly covering the staffing of youth and children's groups.

Sheffield women (and men) have been generous in financial support for African delegates to this conference and some of the expenses of our Sierra Leone friends in particular.
The former Sheffield North-East Circuit and The Methodist Circuit in SICEM have come together and are awaiting the blessing of the Edinburgh Conference.
Since it is not normal to have a Bishop at a Methodist Synod in Britain, the presence of Bishop Jack immediately raised an interest, but his presence amongst us faded into insignificance when placed alongside the vision he had for the future of our working together.
