During the time of the Holy Roman Empire Augsburg was a bishopric principality.
The district of Augsburg was established in 1972 by merging the former districts of Augsburg and Schwabmünchen and parts of other adjoining districts.

The alphabetical indices of the wedding records are digitalized for the Diocese of Passau (not all wedding records have indices though!), so the staff of Passau Diocesan Archives is able to find wedding records even if the parish is not exactly known.
