A scarce eighteenth century engraving of Goodman's 1599 pictorial plan of the principal thoroughfares in the parish of St. Martin Outwich in the heart of the City of London.
Although the house was demolished in 1890 by the Great Eastern Railway, the elaborately carved oak frontage is preserved in the V.&A. Engraved by M.S.Barenger (fl.1807-1831) from an original study (now in the Bishopsgate Institute) by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd (1793-1864), the master recorder of 19th century London.
A fine antique engraving of the Bishopsgate church, originally engraved by William Henry Toms (fl.1723-1758) in 1736 from an original drawing by the painter Robert West (fl.1734-1739) for their series of views known collectively as "Perspective Views of all the Ancient Churches..." (London 1736-1739).

To accommodate Bishopsgate's passengers, new low level platforms were constructed at Bishopsgate, one underneath the existing station and the other on the south side of the old terminus.
The station was closed on 1st November 1875 although some trains continued to use it until 1879, at the same time Bishopsgate Low Level Station was renamed Bishopsgate.
Work immediately started on rebuilding and extending Bishopsgate as a massive goods station to supplement the earlier Brick Lane Goods Station (later renamed Spitalfields Goods Station); and together they were to become one of the largest in London handling the majority of the goods traffic to and from the east of England.

Notes: The station was originally built for the passengers who had used Bishopsgate High Level Station when the Great Eastern Railway extended their line into Liverpool Street.
It was opened as Bishopsgate Low Level but 'Low Level' was dropped after 1.11.1875 when Bishopsgate High Level was closed on the opening of Liverpool Street to suburban trains.
