  Bishopthorpe
Bishopthorpe is a small town in the unitary authority of the City of York, south of York, Yorkshire and close to the River Ouse, with about 3500 inhabitants.
It was formerly known as St. Andrewthorpe, but in the 13th century, Archbishop Grey bought the manor house and gave it to the Dean and Chapter of York Minster.
Bishopthorpe was made a Conservation Area in 1989.

 York Walks /4 : Riverside walk - Rowntree Park to Bishopthorpe
The walk was a combination of two of the routes featured in Ivan E Broadhead's excellent book Beyond the Bars, which I refer to constantly and recommend to anyone, particularly York residents who would like to learn more about the area outside the city walls.
Apparently it is Bishopthorpe Bridge, and it was constructed in 1976.
A total contrast to Bishopthorpe Bridge is the better-known and much admired Bishopthorpe Palace, home to the Archbishop of York.

 Walk #568: York to Selby
On the approaches to Bishopthorpe it started to be spoiled by the noise of cars, which signalled the approach of the Bishopthorpe Bridge.
This was a surprisingly elegant structure, with the two carriageways being carried over the river by two adjacent concrete spans that were curved in plan, and the ripples on the water reflected up onto the underside of the bridge in a very pleasant manner.
Bishopthorpe itself turned out to be a nice village, with a red-roofed village church and even a palace in it.

 Recent bird sightings in York and North Yorkshire from the York Ornithological Club
A Nuthatch was again noted at Bishopthorpe on the 27th while 5+ Treecreepers were at Askham Bog on the 7th and notable finch flocks included 20 Chaffinches at Skipwith Common on the 30th, c.
Returning ducks were noted in the form of 4 Wigeon on a pond by the Ouse at Riccall on the 5th, 2 Common Teal flying upriver at Bishopthorpe on the 6th and a pair of eclipse-plumaged Pintail at Wash Dike on Skipwith Common on the 29th.
Meanwhile, Spotted Flycatchers were seen at Clifton Ings on the 8th and 16th with a Nuthatch in the grounds of Bishopthorpe Palace on the 6th and a regional influx of Jays was represented by sightings at Fulford, Rawcliffe Ings, Skipwith Common and York itself from the 20th.

A 'redhead' Smew was found on the Ouse near Bishopthorpe Bridge on the 31st while 4 Goosander were at Clifton Ings late in the month.
A Water Rail was heard at Fulford Ings on the 13th and a Common Sandpiper was at Bishopthorpe Bridge on the 10th.
Unusual inland, a Kittiwake was on the towpath of the Ouse opposite Rowntree Park on the 13th while a Turtle Dove was heard on the edge of Fulford Golf Course on the 20th.

Over the years, a number of restoration and remodelling projects have taken place – the most extensive being carried out by Archbishop Drummond (1761 – 1777) who transformed the original building to its present appearance.

I discovered this very special place during my recent walk to Bishopthorpe.
There's a large cross standing at what I imagine would have been the other end of the church, and underneath it is this inscription (above): "On this spot there stood for centuries the parish church of St Andrew Bishopthorpe.
