The palace at Bishopthorpe has a staff of 15, so their average salary is about £10,000.
Since 50 of these employees are at Lambeth Palace and 15 more at Bishopthorpe, on average a bishop will have just one secretary and possibly one chaplain, neither of them very well paid.

Since then, the village became known as Bishopthorpe.
In the 13th century, Archbishop Grey bought the manor house at what was then St. Andrewthorpe and gave it to the Dean and Chapter of York Minster.

 Recent bird sightings in York and North Yorkshire from the York Ornithological Club
Meanwhile, Spotted Flycatchers were seen at Clifton Ings on the 8th and 16th with a Nuthatch in the grounds of Bishopthorpe Palace on the 6th and a regional influx of Jays was represented by sightings at Fulford, Rawcliffe Ings, Skipwith Common and York itself from the 20th.
A Nuthatch was again noted at Bishopthorpe on the 27th while 5+ Treecreepers were at Askham Bog on the 7th and notable finch flocks included 20 Chaffinches at Skipwith Common on the 30th, c.
Returning ducks were noted in the form of 4 Wigeon on a pond by the Ouse at Riccall on the 5th, 2 Common Teal flying upriver at Bishopthorpe on the 6th and a pair of eclipse-plumaged Pintail at Wash Dike on Skipwith Common on the 29th.

Bishopthorpe itself turned out to be a nice village, with a red-roofed village church and even a palace in it.
On the approaches to Bishopthorpe it started to be spoiled by the noise of cars, which signalled the approach of the Bishopthorpe Bridge.
Turn left and follow the road south for a few hundred yards past the church, and then follow the road as it curves to the right through Bishopthorpe.

An Archiepiscopal Palace no longer stands in the City of York, but the Archbishops still have their residence just three miles to the south, in the village of Bishopthorpe near York Races.
The present building is of many periods, but the chapel dates from the original palace erected by Archbishop Walter de Grey in 1241.
The palace is open once a year for the archiepiscopal garden party, or by appointment for group bookings.
