A study by the Bislig City health office and the University of the Philippines Manila College of Public Health revealed a significant rise in cancer cases in Bislig and linked air pollution caused by the operations of Picop Resources Inc. (Picop) to the increase in respiratory ailments among children in the city.
The report titled "Environmental Health Assessment in Bislig City Phase I" was a two-year descriptive study to determine the existence of potential environmental risks that may be associated with current health conditions.
Bislig City health officer Dr. Brenda Estrella and professors Victorio Molina and Primavera Galinato of the University of the Philippines in Manila conducted the study in 2003.

Their suspicion was substantiated by the result of the health and environmental study conducted by Bislig City health office and professors from University of the Philippines Manila and Cebu-based San Carlos.
Of the 10 leading causes of mortality in the city, cancer ranked 5th in 2000, 4th in 2001 and 3rd in 2002.

Erwin Torres, assistant parish priest of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Barangay Mangagoy, Bislig City, said that Defensor (who has announced he was taking a leave of absence from the DENR) had promised to the residents that the alleged air- and water-pollution problems will be addressed at the end of 2005.
A two-year study completed in October 2005 by the Bislig City health office and the University of the Philippines-Manila and Cebu-based San Carlos University has substantiated reports that air and water pollution in the vicinity of Picop is very alarming.
