German battleship Bismarck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bismarck and Prinz Eugen were forced into emergency manoeuvres when they believed they had detected the sounds of torpedoes and then by the appearance of a Sunderland flying-boat.
Bismarck was therefore able to make good time on 25/26 May in her unhindered passage towards France and protective air cover and destroyer escort.
Throughout that night, Bismarck was the target of incessant torpedo attacks by the Tribal class destroyers Cossack, Sikh, Maori and Zulu, with the Polish Piorun.

 Bismarck's Final Battle - Part 1
In Bismarck's final battle, the ship was fought from the conning tower, since she was no longer maneuverable, but at the extremely close range the engagement was fought even this station proved to be no safe haven for its occupants.
Increased gun ranges and the threat of aerial attack meant that the deck armor had to be effective against shells and bombs with very steep angles of fall.
Bismarck continued on a course south to southwest until 0300 on 25 May, when she made a long gradual turn to starboard and maneuvered some distance behind her zig-zagging British pursuers on a course towards Cape Finnestere, France.

The Bismarck's sea trials were accomplished with her share of mechanical problems, but the shakedown cruise brought her up to a fine pitch of readiness, along with her crew.
Bismarck and Prinz Eugen were both straddling her regularly, and the range fell to seven miles.
Bismarck still had a chance, as only the British Gibraltar Fleet was in any position to intercept her.

Bismarck - The History - The Final Battle
The Bismarck, steering on a meandering course at 7 knots, finally came into view to the south-east at about 0843 and at a range of about 23,000 meters (25,000 yards).
With the Bismarck still defiantly flying her ensign, the British had no alternative but to continue to fire on the ship until the Germans capitulated or the Bismarck was sunk, Both British battleships were running critically low on fuel and would soon have to break off the action.
At 1036, the Bismarck was hit on the port side by a third torpedo fired by Dorsetshire.

Bismarck had sailed 200 tons of fuel short of a full load as there had been worries about fumes following the deaths of several Polish labourers whilst cleaning her oil tanks.
Suffolk's radar was multi-directional with a range of 13 miles which enabling her to sweep in all directions except a blind spot at her stern.
Within moments, Bismarck, her elated crew now focused on the battle once more, was scoring hits on the new battleship: The first 15" shell to find its mark went struck the lightly armoured compass platform, killing or mortally wounding all personnel except Captain Leach, the Chief Yeoman of signals, and the Navigating Officer.

The Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen were to proceed out of the Baltic Sea and head north to Bergan in German occupied Norway from where they would try to break out into the open North Atlantic using a route passing either north or south of Iceland.
On May 22 the Bismarck took the lead, heading for a course north of Iceland, and by noon was zigzagging due to enemy submarine and aircraft alerts.

Loss of HMS Hood Part 4
That 100% hits occur at 0% range is true almost by definition, but the percentage of hits occurring at maximum range (i.e., at 45° elevation) is somewhat more difficult to define.
Taking this figure as the maximum range of Bismarck's guns would mean that Hood was at about 36% of maximum range when she exploded.
Assuming that a shell or shells from Bismarck precipitated the disaster, this also explains the short delay that witnesses noted between the arrival of Bismarck's fatal salvo and the first evidence of the blast, and may in fact explain why many did not causally connect the two events.

Third, of course, is the fact that Prince of Wales was suffering from teething problems in her main mounts, to put it mildly, and was not getting nearly the output of shells she might have enjoyed in a late-war engagement when all the bugs with the British 14"/45 mount had been worked out.
Late-war, at long range, with blindfire radar fire-control, and turrets working, I believe King George V was a decent match for the Bismarck.
If the American stays at range (30,000-35,000 yards), she should be able to deliver many more hits to Yamato than she receives in return, because she can both shoot and maneuver (due to her much better stable vertical fire-control system elements).

Published statements of the range, for example, range from an apparent low of 14,500 yards [13,260 meters], given in Raven and Roberts, to an apparent high of 19,685 yards [18,000 meters] given in Müllenheim-Rechberg.
the range set on the sights of the guns to obtain a hit, and "navigational range," the geometric distance between the firing ship and the target, discrepancies in more knowledgeable presentations are difficult to explain.
As Bismarck was bearing approximately 53° off the bow during the final run in, it is evident that both Hood's and Prince of Wales' 'A' arcs had in fact been well clear since the turn at 0555, provided one would have been willing to accept some damage from muzzle blast.

With her range limited by the loss of fuel and her speed reduced by the loss of a boiler, she would soon have to steam for a friendly port.
While the deck of the battleship was a shambles, however, her hull was still relatively intact and she refused to sink.
Bismarck's defeat at the hands of the Royal Navy was doubly crippling to the German fleet, for after the British victory on 26th May the Bismarck's equally formidable sister-ship, Tirpitz, rarely dared to venture out of port, spending most of the war hiding in a Norwegian fjord.

Bismarck would have killed the Richelieu in a suprise engagement (a la Prince of Wales and Hood) because of the superior training of the German naval crews.
Bismarck was good in short range level firing combat, but very weak in longer-range plunging fire defense or AA defense.
So the defenders of the Bismarck get their facts wrong (perhaps not intentionally), write off the relevant as irrelevant, make up statistics, argue by the seat of their pants, and stil they say that the Bismarck was the greatest battleship ever built.
