She was named after Otto von Bismarck and is famous for sinking HMS Hood in 1941, and for the subsequent pursuit which ended with her destruction just three days later.
The construction of the second French Dunkerque class battleship made redesign necessary, and Bismarck's displacement increased to 42,600 tons, although officially her tonnage was still only 35,000 tons in accordance with the Washington Naval Treaty, becoming the prototype of the proposed battleships envisaged in Plan Z.
The two British battleships, King George V and Rodney had been sailing to approach Bismarck from the west, and on the morning of 27 May 1941 they neared her.

On May 23, Bismarck and Prinz Eugen were sighted in the Denmark Strait northwest of Iceland by the British cruisers HMS Suffolk and Norfolk.
Bismarck engaged Hood, and at 0600 a 15-inch shell from her fourth salvo tore through the ship, which split in two and sank with the loss of 1,415 men.
At 2047 that night, torpedo-bombers from Ark Royal scored hits that damaged Bismarck's steering gear and forced her to steam north northwest, directly towards the oncoming King George V and Rodney and shadowed closely by the cruiser HMS Sheffield and five destroyers led by Captain Philip Vian in HMS Cossack.

This book is both a history and a photo album of the famous German battleship, and the photos are particularly useful in showing both the construction stages of the ship and for the many interior shots.
The diagrams, which are in German and are not translated, seem fairly accurate, although during the destruction of the Bismarck they appear to show the King George V firing torpedos at the Bismarck, when in fact the King George V had no torpedo tubes.
It's also puzzling that the translator, according to the note at the end of the book, was unaware until 1989, with the publication of Robert Ballard's book on the discovery of the Bismarck, of the number of German sailors rescued after the sinking of the Bismarck.
