The legendary Indian shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan Sahib is the third classical musician to be awarded the Bharat Ratna (in 2001), the highest civilian honour in India.
Bismillah Khan is perhaps single handedly responsible for making the shehnai, a famous classical instrument.
It was Khan Sahib who poured his heart out into Raga Kafi from the Red Fort on the eve of India’s first Republic Day ceremony.

Khan began learning music at the age of three and learned it like a child learns language; his older sister Jehanara instructed him in singing, being more advanced, and they learned together before he took instruction alone.
From '38 Ravi Shankar studied under Allauddin Khan in Maihar, and married Annapurna '41, whose reputation on the surbahar (a deeper-voiced, heftier relative of the sitar) is unrivalled (but she has rarely played in public since the '40s- -early '50s when she played jugalbandis or duets in Bombay and Delhi with her then-husband).
Khan contributed to the soundtrack of Satyajit Ray's film Devi '60, one of the first non-Western directors to breach the international film barrier; during that decade Khan was second only to Shankar in Indian fame on the international circuit.

Shujaat Husain Khan, son and disciple of the late Ustad Vilayat Khan, is regarded as one of the finest North Indian classical musicians of his generation.
He belongs to the Imdad Khan gharana (school) of the sitar and is the seventh in an unbroken line in a family that has produced many musical masters, including his father, Ustad Vilayat Khan; his grandfather, Ustad Inayat Khan; his great-grandfather Ustad Imdad Khan; and his great-great-grandfather, Ustad Sahebdad Khan—all leading artists of their generation.
Hidayat Khan, son and disciple of the late Ustad Vilayat Khan, was born in 1975 and is seventh in an unbroken line of sitar players.
