	Introduction to Bistable Mechanisms
		Bistable mechanisms make up a class of mechanisms which have two stable equilibrium states within their range of motion.
		Bistable mechanisms require no power input to remain stable at each equilibrium state.
		Although compliant segments offer challenges such as limited motion and reduction in energy output, they may be effectively integrated into bistable mechanisms allowing motion and energy storage to occur within the same member.

		Bistable tubes are split tubes with essentially the same geometry as a carpenter's tape; however, unlike a carpenter's tape, which is only stable when extended (b), these structures have a second stable state, they are also stable when coiled (a).
		There are two ways to make a tube bistable; either by altering the bending stiffnesses of the structure so that it is no longer isotropic, for instance by using a fibre-reinforced composite, or by setting up an initial prestress in the structure.
		In order to make a tube bistable without prestress, it is necessary to: (i) increase the torsional stiffness, and (ii) increase the coupling between bending in the longitudinal and transverse directions.

	Nanoparticle-polymer bistable devices invention
		The doped nanofibers impart bistable electrical characteristics to the polymer body, such that the polymer body is reversibly convertible between a low resistance state and a high resistance state by application of an electrical voltage.
		The combination of the nanofibers and nanoparticles provides for a bistable polymer body that is converted between the low resistance state and the high resistance state by application of an electrical voltage to the bistable polymer body.

	MEMS Bistable Mechanisms at BYU
		As the name suggests, bistable mechanisms are mechanisms that are stable in two positions.
		These mechanisms gain their bistable behavior from the energy stored in the flexible segments which deflect to allow mechanism motion.
		Currently, studies are being done to investigate the usefulness of bistable mechanisms on the micro-level as valves and switches.
