Bistrita is one of the oldest Transylvanian towns.
Bistrita became the residence town of the Bistrita-Nasaud county in 1876.
Bistrita’s inhabitants witnessed the Union of Transylvania with Romania on the 1st December 1918, as well as the liberation of the city from Horthyst rule on the 11th October 1944.

From the train and bus stations it's about ten minutes' walk to the centre; heading southeast on Strada Garii you'll pass a typically hideous Centru Civic, but as you turn northeast on Strada Sincai you enter a more attractive townscape.
