Bit gag   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
A bit gag is a gag-like device used in certain human sexual practices.
It bears a passing visual resemblance to the bit used in a bridle for a horse, and much of its sexual value stems from fetishistic symbolism in human pony play.
Unlike the metal bit of a horse's bridle, the bar of a bit gag is usually a soft rubber cylinder.

 Fitting a Gag Bit Correctly
To be able to use a gag bit safely and effectively, you must already understand the concept of riding your horse from your seat and leg to your hand and be able to use your hands lightly--a gag is too severe for a heavy-handed rider.
Gag bits are not off limits automatically if you are a novice rider--as long as you have a knowledgeable instructor.
This gag bridle has rope cheekpieces, which move faster through the holes in the bit ring, acting more quickly on the mouth and poll when the rein is applied.

Lee Ziegler, Bits for Gaited Horses
CURB: A curb is a bit with shanks and a chain or strap under the jaw that acts as a fulcrum for the lever action of the bit in the horse's mouth.
GAG: A gag bit is not a snaffle even though it has no shanks and may have a jointed mouthpiece.
Forget the curb bits, they will hurt and confuse a horse and he will eventually respond to one either by tucking his head behind the action of the bit and ignoring it or "cold jawing" it and requiring a longer shank or a twisted curb chain to obey.

Bits and Pieces   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
A snaffle is a bit without shanks that works on the lips, tongue and bars of the horse's mouth with only as much pressure as you, the rider, directly put on it through your contact (pull, to be crude) on the reins.
A curb is a bit with shanks and a chain or strap under the jaw that acts as a fulcrum for the lever action of the bit in the horse's mouth.
Horses aren't born knowing about bits; they must be taught to respond to bit pressure, and to translate tugs given through the reins as requests to turn, stop, back, hold their heads in a particular way, or stretch and bend their necks.

 The "Wonder" Bit
This bit does nothing for teaching self carriage, nothing for teaching lateral flexion, nothing for teaching the horse to work through his body, and nothing for teaching the basic "calm, obedient, forward, straight, supple and light" which are the goals of good horsemanship everywhere.
The Gag Bit features a sliding mouthpiece that is able to move up and down the cheek of the bit providing a variable amount of leverage to the corners of the mouth.
The physics of such a bit (it is actually more like a gag bit, due to the pressure on the poll and corners of the mouth) were encouraging her to stargaze, hollow her back, and pace.

About Bits - Buford Saddle and Tack Co.
Ring and dee bits are generally used on young horses in transition to introduce them to carrying a mouthpiece before moving on to a shank type bit.
The Gag Bit is characterized by the sliding mouthpiece that is able to move further down the shank than the normal bit in order to provide more lift to the corners of the horse's mouth.
The gag function is instrumental in teaching proper head position and is very popular among Barrel Racer's who need a bit to lift the inside shoulder and position the horse's weight properly for the high speed turns.

 ABOUT BITS
Adjust the bit so that when the rider pulls on the reins in a straight line toward his or her elbows, while in a normal riding position, the cheek pieces of the bridle do not flex out from the side of the horse’s face.
Once the bit is adjusted, as described above, pull the bit to one side of the mouth (not hard), at this point there should be the width of your index finger between the edge of the lip and the side of the bit.
There is also more chance of the bit being too low and the horse then being able to put his tongue over the bit, or the middle of the joint will press into the roof of the horse’s mouth causing him to resist any rein pressure.

 Combined and Gag bits
The combined bits and the gag bits were made in an attempt to combine the two actions.
However the use of two bits and two sets of reins require a rider that is well coordinated, a novice rider would not be able to use such a combination properly.
