BitTorrent client - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A BitTorrent client is a computer program that is used to download and upload files via the BitTorrent protocol.
The first client for the BitTorrent protocol was developed by Bram Cohen.
The client also intermediates peering between itself, source file servers ("trackers") and other clients, thereby yielding great distribution efficiencies.

BitTorrent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
BitTorrent is a variation of earlier Peer-to-Peer or P2P protocols which allowed groups of computers to share files with one another, instead of having to access a central repository.
BitTorrent 4.0.4 running under Windows XP The method used by BitTorrent to distribute files parallels the one used by the eDonkey2000 network, but nodes in eDonkey's file sharing network usually share and download a much larger number of files, making the bandwidth available to each transfer much smaller.
BitTorrent is also used to distribute updates to the BitTorrent client itself, as well as to other clients such as Azureus and BitComet.

BitTorrent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
BitTorrent greatly reduces network load because it encourages peers, or client computers, to download fragments of files from each other, instead of from a central repository.
Clients report information to the tracker periodically and in exchange receive information about other clients that they can connect to.
Many major open source and free software projects encourage BitTorrent as well as conventional downloads of their products to increase availability and reduce load on their own servers.

There are a multitude of clients available for the BitTorrent, because unlike some peer to peer applications (such as Kazaa), the BitTorrent implementation is open source.
This means that programmers are free to take the source code to the program and modify it, if they feel there is something they'd like to change.
Of course, this means that some of the clients are fully-tested and polished while others are rough or lacking features.

And with good reason: BitTorrent works amazingly well to spread out the burden of creating thousands of copies of a file across the clients, or peers, that are downloading the file.
