The bulk of the Armenian population of Bitlis province, for example, which consisted almost entirely of old men, women, and children, was destroyed within the boundaries of the province; there was no deportation, so to speak.
Except for the city of Van itself, the rest of the Armenian population of Van province which, together with Bitlis province, comprised the cradle of the Armenian nation, was likewise exterminated through a series of local massacres.
A large part of the Armenian population of that province, about 20-25,000, in particular that of Erzincan, was massacred at that narrow gorge with the help of the irregulars, i.e., the brigands of the 86th Cavalry Regiment of the 29th division of the Ninth Army Corps of the Ottoman Third Army headquartered in Erzurum.

Sandwiched between two massifs, the Musgüney Daglari (2,607m/8,556ft) to the west and the Kavussahap Daglari (3,103m/10,184ft) to the east, Bitlis, capital of its province, hugs the sides of the deep Basor Deresi in the valley of the Bitlis Çayi, a tributary of the Tigris.
The population of the surrounding villages is mainly Kurdish, the principal occupation being livestock rearing (sheep and goats) and cultivation of cereals, vegetables and fruit on little irrigated plots of land.
From the 16th century onwards Bitlis was the capital of a Kurdish beylik.
