 Emigre Font Design Information: Lo-Res
The number in each Lo-Res font name indicates the number of pixels in its body, or ppem ("pixels per em".) On a standard Macintosh display, this is equal to the point size; under Windows the point size will appear reduced by approximately 75% on a 96 dpi display.
In contrast, a bitmap font is designed to be optimized for a specific resolution; that is, a specific number of pixels relative to it's body.
Both are abbreviations: Bitmap = "map of bits" (A bit being the smallest element on the map or grid.) Pixel = "picture element" (A pixel being the smallest element in a picture that is constrained by a grid.) Bitmap typefaces are composed of pixels.

The font is the problem, since Courier was designed to look like an IBM Selectric typewriter of the 1970s, with eighty characters per line and six lines per inch, not to look good on the screen.
Bitmap fonts at the same point size as scalable fonts are larger and easier to read.
Bitmap fonts are surprisingly inexpensive and quick to create, and as easy to use as the fonts that came with Windows.

Instead of using torque's font system, the control loads the font from the bitmap you give it.
The only way you are going to get rid of that is by choosing a different version of the font bitmap depending on what resolution you are drawing to (double the resolution, double the font size, increase the resolution by 50%, better hope your font has an even number of pixels).
Then I change the font code to select a scaled version of the font (a different font size) so that in the end the font bitmap is drawn to the screen with no stretching.

And so, considering how many bitmap fonts are still in use by games, how many are freely available, and how I haven't seen any bitmap font resources for flash, I thought it would be a good idea to create a couple bitmap font tools, not only for myself, but for the gaming and flash community.

Font formats overview, TTF font file format, truetype file format, raster font format, bitmap font format fon, ...
In raster fonts, a glyph is a bitmap that Windows uses to draw a single character or symbol in the font.
In vector fonts, a glyph is a collection of line endpoints that define the line segments Windows uses to draw a character or symbol in the font.
Because the bitmaps for each glyph in a raster font are designed for a specific resolution of device, raster fonts are generally considered to be device dependent.

 The TrueType Font File
Apple makes a distinction between a "TrueType font" (which refers to a particular font outline definition technology) and an "sfnt-housed font," which refers to any font which uses the same packaging format as a TrueType font: that is, it uses the same directory structure and the same table format and meaning for any tables present.
The font directory, the first of the tables, is a guide to the contents of the font file.
OFA allows different font scalers to wrap different font formats within the basic structure of a TrueType font; the scaler type in the offset subtable of the font's directory is used to indicate which scaler should be used with a particular font.

 Font Matcher - by InFeRnØ
Font Matcher uses 200x200 pixels bitmaps in Windows format (.BMP), in any color depth from 1 to 8 bits (B/W to 256 Grayscale).
The letter to be recognised MUST be fl (and I mean 100% fl, althought antialiased edges are fully supported), and background MUST be white (again, 100% white, since Font Matcher scans the white areas of the bitmap to find the bounding box for that particular letter).

In principle, given adequate resolution, the screen preview quality of documents set in bitmap fonts, and set in outline fonts, should be comparable, since the outline fonts have to be rasterized dynamically anyway for use on a printer or a display screen.

Otherwise, the font is assumed to be printer-resident (or else, to be supplied later by the printer driver, although that practice is uncommon on UNIX systems, and also, makes the PostScript file useless elsewhere).
